She is in her room asleep and I am sitting here listening to breathing just worrying like hell. Night before last she started a mild temp then developed a nasty cough/ cold but fever never really got over 38.

Today she was in really good spirits temp 37.5 eating and playing then at 5 her temp went up to 39 so I gave paracetamol up the bottom (won't take calpol long story) and she went to sleep.

Don't want to fuss over her too much and wake her up but she seems comfy enough just fast breathing like they do when feverish.

I am just so concerned. Have made an appoint. with doctors at 4pm tomorrow. I get really worried when she gets ill I just feel like crying

JuJubean, bless you it is horrid feeling when they are poorly!

the thing about fever that we have been told time after time is that the most important thing is that it comes down (even a little) with paracetamol. Id you can remember that she can have Ibrufen as well, alternating or both at the same time if you need to.

Juju I know how you feel, it is Ok, remember that most people on MN have had a child with a temp over 39, and who survived It is Ok. Though I know it puts you on high alert doesn't it, which is uncomfortable and scary.

Usually viruses replicate twice a day, in the morning and in the evening - so she is prob having the evening spike, this is v normal.

She's had the paracetamol, it will be coming down - is she covered with a sheet, not duvet? etc.

yes a sheet for legs and a light cotton t shirt for top. thank you so much for talking to me.

She has been a poorly thing when little; a few admissions to hosp which were v traumatic (more for her) so I am just crap at being strong.

Re. virus replication - can you explain what you mean by that THerbs it is v interesting and would help me to understand why it spikes at night.

sounds like she is being really well looked after and loved.. nothing wrong with feeling wobbly about our children being poorly.

if you offer her something to drink perhaps make it so it is not icy cold, both DS's seem to hate that when they have a fever, much prefering to drink room temperature liquids.

do you have anyone with you that could make you a drink? perhaps try to rest in preparation for the possibility of being up in the night with her?

Keep talking will be around for most of the evening..

Thank you so much for that comment. I am running on adrenaline as we do when they get ill!
This is why I know I couldn't cope with another baby - my anxiety is just way up there x

Juju it's something the Dr explained once. Apparently a bacterial thing has a constant temp, usually, because the bacteria multiply all the time, while viruses tend to do it twice a day, so you get a surge of fighting in the early evening (around 4-6pm is common time for temp to go up) and again around 12 hrs later I think.

I don't know if it's true but sounds about right

Colds/coughs are generally a virus. How is her temp now?

Having an ill child is horrible, I hate it too.

You are doing all the right things, keeping her temperature down, caring well for her. She will most likely sleep it off now that you have given her the paracetemol. Did she sleep badly last night with her cough?

Can you put a matress on her floor so that you are in the same room if it makes you feel better?

ah that is interesting, I wish I had your Dr he sounds very informative. It is quite hard to tell bacterial vs virus isn't it?

She seems cooler on touch but haven't stuck the thing in her ear as I really don't want to wake her as she is having a good sleep with no cough. The cough is v loose but sounds like there is really loads of mucus in there. No sickness or diorreah and in herself she was chirpy all day. - looking on the positives! Just the damn temp...

Hi, I know what you mean when you worry even more because of being poorly and hosp visits when younger. My dd (now just 3yo) was just one when she went into anaphalytic (sorry about spelling) shock and we nearly lost her twice. Since then if her temp goes up or she gets a rash/virus i start to panic. I always give her calpol and Ibuprofen and that really helps with temperature. Also my doc recommended giving her juice lollies as when she has had a bad cough it may be sore for her to swallow food so by having a lolly it is getting extra liquid down and keeps them cool. Turn her radiator down in her room as the heat dries out the room which will also make her cough. xx

Thank you all - she woke up for a cuddle and a moan then fell asleep in my bed. Definately cooler - just hope the temp buggers off altogether tomorrow. Reassuring to hear all your stories. They seem so vulnerable and fragile when they are so ill x

JuJubean - how is she feeling today?... hope you had a peaceful night,

Jujubean77 · 21/10/2009 09:58

Hello peeps,

Well not exactly peaceful but could have been worse I suppose. Fever came back around 2am but not too high. She asked for ham and toast at 3am which I gave her and she ate nicely and drank some water.

Then I noticed she developed an itchy rash very faint and raised, she has had this before with a fever and no one knew what it was, one Dr told me it was a viral rash. It is all v odd but this morn she is happy and fever is down.

I am taking her to a pead in Town at 4pm, I just want her checked over so we can relax a bit.x will keep you posted...
