A bit bazarre actually - ds 28months. Sunday night a bit disturbed through night - no temp just wanted in our bed , yesterday in the am very lethargic, refusing food, usual snotty nose but not massively. We were at docs anyway for some eczema cream so doc check over and all fine ears, nose, throat , chest etc... says probs viral and keep watered up etc.... by lunchtime he is bouncing about as normal and i would say 100% which was a v quick turnaround. As a result he went to nursery today - they rang me at 1pm and said did i want to come and look at him as he is very happy and jolly and eating normal but wont turn his neck - turns his whole body and neck looks swollen - naturally i tore out of work and we got straight in docs who identified it was his glands huge in his neck - aagin he is very jolly and eating etc and has just started moving his neck more and it does look pretty normal (nurofen will have kicked in). Is it likely he is about to get something as i would thought they would have been up yesterday when he was not himself not today when he is normal? i have arranged the day off tomorow as a precaution but really i wonder if he could go in.

I had to go to work, dh gave 5ml of calpol b4 bed and said he went really happy and even sang nursery rhymes. He is sound asleep - well sound asleep apart from croaky but soundish. Feels cool so no temp. Will keep him off i think in case sickening for something then at least if tom is all clear he can go in friday. Thanks for the bump

He might come down with something yet but you are best just to keep going to work because it may be a few days yet before (if) he becomes poorly.Swollen glands are a sign his immune system is working so he may well be fine. On the other hand, no problem if you want to keep him off to rest. It is a real problem being a parent and an employee at times.

Mumps?

My ds1 had this, just as you describe, his neck became really swollen and he'd move his whole body round rather than turn the neck. The lymph glands in children are really sensitive apparently.

In ds1's case they think it was a throat infection. He was quite poorly with it though and needed IV antibiotics . Don't be surprised if glands take weeks rather than days to get completely back to normal.

thanks - i have some lieu to take inthe morning and was plannign a big sleep and a shopping trp so will now take him too - arranged care for tom afty so will see how he fairs for friday. No swollen bits anywhere else so dont think mumps though i dont really know. I thought yesterday when he was v lethargic early on was his sickness and then he bounced back . Bizarre - he likes to keep us on our toes. Yes it is hard trying to work - it goes well then wham you have a run of illness and you wonder if you should just pack it all in . . A big disagreement with dh over him forgetting his mobile so me getting called out when todya he was 'on call' for mishaps doesnt help grrrrrr

Bamboo how old is your ds1? The doc did say to dh to keep an eye on his throat as could be getting tonsilitus but no sign of it yet. No temp though and more than willing to trough on his grub.

ds is nearly 4.

Did they rule out swine flu? Dh has taken ds to docs today as his glands came up like before, and he's been lethargic and generally under the weather. We thought it was a throat infection again but they swabbed, and think it may be mild swine flu. I felt really guilty that we'd taken him into the surgery but it just hadn't occurred to me.

oh no bamboo - hope you ds is well soon and if it is stays really mild. No they never even mentioned swine flu - he has been fine all day - quite jolly. Gone to bed now happy enough so hopefully i will get a full day in at work.
