Constipated 14 mo

DD is 14 mo and is constipated at the moment. She never seems to poop very easily but she's really struggling right now. She's a bit of a fuss bag with food so I give her as many watery fruit, veg and dried fruit as I can but it's not so easy to increase this.

Any ideas how I can help her?

Banana can be constipating, as can weetabix

Does she drink much water?

Poor thing, they can really struggle with this sometimes.

She doesn't eat banana and isn't keen on any breakfast cereal at the moment. I think she's having too much bread but I'm finding it difficult to cut it down. She's never drunk all that much fluid but bizarely she's drinking more than usual at the moment??

I am feeling your pain, our dd has had a history of constipation from around 10 months. The first thing I would recommend is water let her drink it out of anything as long as you can get it into her. The next thing we tried was a small amount of prunes mashed, this seemed to help the most. Your GP can prescribe lactulose which will help soften it and lots of vaseline on her bottom will help poo pass a little easier too. I do hope things get better.

Try water in a sippy cup or doidy cup, to up her fluid intake, even a teaspoon or syringe

Fresh orange juice, diluted, could be worth a try

Milk can constipate too, but I am reluctant to say cut down as she is so young

Is she hot at night?

I agree with the syringe suggestion, we used this when dd was very young when she wouldn't drink.

Add a little prune juice to her water. Give a little every day until it loosens...and it will, believe me

Luckily for me she loves prunes and has some everyday. Prune juice is a great idea, thank you. Also drinking water out of anything is such a helpful suggestion, she loves it when I have a bottle of water with a sports cap. I'll encourage her to drink from one of those between her meals. Thanks ladies. xx
