Lumps under skin of baby's neck- help!?

Hi, I was sitting stroking DS's neck last night and tonight and noticed that there are a few lumps (about 5) under the skin of his neck on the left hand side, about 2 cm behind and under his ear. They are about half a cm in diameter. The right side of his neck has no lumps. He seems totally fine otherwise, he didn't flinch when I pressed them so they don't seem sore. He's got a bit of a cold just now so do you think it could be related to that?? I'm worried in case it's something else, do you think I should take him to the dr? He is 17 months old and has always been in great health.

Any advice hugely appreciated.

They are glands. They are normal, honest!

go to the doctor get it checked out and put your mind at rest. ds has lump on his neck but dr said it's just a gland.

It sounds like swollen glands.

My DS had this when he was a baby. It is probably related to the cold.

If you are worried at all then go to see the doctor, but it does sound like swollen glands to me (disclaimer I'm not a medical expert!!)

Second that they are glands, can be quite tender to the touch especially behind the ears, your poor LO.

Does anyone know why I can only feel them on one side then? I'm going to the midwife on Thursday anyway so will ask for GP appt to get him checked out. I'm trying not to worry and be sensible but you know what it's like the moment you hit that Google button argh!

Don't know sorry, but my DS's swollen glands were only on one side too if that makes you feel less worried.

ds's is only on his left side. it's been like it for ages. i've got a lump on my jaw which is a blocked gland (only on one side and again i've had it like that for years)

Glands have a habit of coming up and going down in any particular way they feel fit. They don't come up all together and you have noticed that your child's glands are up on one side, this is normal. It's just how their body's work. The time to take him to the GP is if you are concerned, if they are big, if they swell up all of a sudden (as in big, not pea size).
Do go to the GP if you are worried. They will check your baby over. The general rule is that if there are no other symptoms and they are not too big then they will not worry but let them check your child over and let them tell you this. I can't see your child, they can.

I've just had DS (age 5) to the docs with the same thing. He's always had small glands that you can feel but one came up that's the size of a pea.

Doc gave him a thorough check and is happy that it's nothing to worry about, felt his liver etc, and said the fact he was otherwise the picture of health was a good sign.

Think they have to be more than 2cm in diameter to be anything to worry about. Doc is going to monitor DS but i came away feeling relieved cos googling is never good news!!
