Gingivitis in 21 mth old

DD who has just recovered from chickenpox is now cutting a couple of molars and has infected gums. I took her to the doctor on Fri who gave her antibiotics - but whatever way we try she just won't take them. Dr said it wasn't entirely necessary to give them, but her gums are really swollen and she is obviously in pain. I feel dreadful as it seems that gingivitis is linked to poor oral hygiene - but we clean her teeth regularly and do take very good care of her! Has anyone else had this kind of problem, and cured with without antibiotics, or does anyone have any brilliant ideas for getting her to take them?
