Immunisation mix up, I?m so cross.

Sorry, really need to rant. My DH took our DD (2.5) for her first MMR jab yesterday but my local Drs refused to give her the injection as, according to them, she?d already had it. My DH insisted that she hadn?t so they called Child Health Services who also confirmed that she?d had it. I then had to phone the Drs and insist that she has never ever had her MMR and as her mother I am 100% certain of this but still they insisted that she?d had it and that they wouldn?t give it to her a second time. So I asked them for the vaccine batch numbers which they couldn?t find a record of (unsurprisingly since she hasn?t had her MMR).

And then, just to make life even more annoying they told me she hadn?t had her meningitis jab ? which she HAS had, she had it at that surgery and I have it in my red book along with vaccine batch numbers.

I?m so furious that they can mess up something as important as immunisations and then not believe me! I?m sure I?m overreacting a bit but I?m just so angry that they are more willing to believe what they have on a computer screen rather than a real life mother. Ok, I know people can get mixed up as there are so many different vaccines, but this is her MMR jab and I thought long and hard about giving it to her (don?t worry, I know now how silly I was to even consider not giving it to her).

I?ve had to beg to get her immunised next week and they?re really against it because immunising twice could be dangerous ? yes, I?m sure it could be, but she?s never had her MMR. I just want to scream.

Has anybody else had a similar problem? Other than getting her records straight should I be doing anything else? I just don?t feel I can trust the health services at all.

I have just had an automatic appointment to take my DS2 (2.6) to the doctors for his 2nd MMR - I couldn't do the date they had booked and requested to change.

When I rang the surgery was told that he shouldn't be having it for another twelve months, that it was his pre-school booster, and not to worry, "there have been a lot of these recently" - oh well that's really reassuring isn't it?

If I could have done the date in question, he might have had it twice, and then again pre-school. To say I was not happy was an understatement...

Thanks for the speedy responses.

She definitely didn't have it at the same time, it was just the one injection and they said at the time that she should come back in three months or so for the MMR as they didn't want to give them all at once. I know for a fact she hasn't had her MMR, I've never been more certain of anything. Plus I'm really anal about dragging that damn red book to every appointmnet and making sure it all gets written down.

Not waving - can't believe they were so blasé about it, especially as they'd sent you the reminder!

Whoever told you being immunised twice could be dangerous was wrong. If someone is already immune (from having had the illness or from immunisation) then another imm won't have any effect. I'm a HV working with asylum seekers and parents often can't remember what imms their children have had. NHS policy is to start the full course from the beginning if there's any doubt about imms status. So its quite likely that some children get extra injections. I've never seen or heard of any problems with this.

Thanks for the info stripeysox - useful to know, don't know why they told me it would be dangerous. Gah.

All I really want is to make sure my daughter has her mmr and that her records are correct. You'd have thought it would be easy!

They've now admitted that there's been a massive mix up so hopefully it will all get resolved.

It's taught me to make sure I keep a close eye on her records from now on though.
