bumbly, could you try mixing it with something yummy, like a spoon of custard or fromage frais, to disguise the taste ?

Assuming lo is old enough for solids of course.

Sorry DC is poorly

I know this sounds like animal wrangling, but have you tried squirting it right down into the back of his throat with the syringe then clamping his jaw shut till he swallows it?

I realise this sounds a bit rough, but better than not getting the meds.

can't give this bloody med with food - one hour before or empty stomach!!!

most impractical thing ever

You will have to clamp him and squirt the medicine, from a syrine, into the pouch of his cheek

clamp his jaw shut and rub his throat (gently)

this will all make him swallow it

he will undoubtedly cry so have cuddles ready straight away

If he is bottle-fed, stick it in his bottle. If not then I'm afraid that RubySlippers' advice is the way to go. I hate doing it, but needs must and all that.

What have you been given? Some antibiotics are truely vile, trimethaprim (the one often given for UTI's) is one of the worst, tastes like nail varnish remover!!

Phone the Dr and say your LO is not tolerating the one you've been given and you need an alternative. They will prescribe you something different.

For future reference amoxycillin can be given as drops, a single dose in 1.25 mls or there abouts, much easier if you have a medicine refusnick!

No need to brutalise your wee one, just get a different one and keep asking for a new one until they give you one that doesn't taste like paint stripper! If it's only slightly iffy mix it with paracetamol or ibuprofen, this works for mine sometimes too.

(why did they give him his MMR if he has a cold and staph infection? thats really bad!)

LOL to empty stomach, mine never have empty stomachs, they either graze or boob hourly!!

I've tried the banana custard thing, but DD spat it out.

Am afraid you'll have to do the brute force thing while you syringe it down throat..

Report
GreenMonkies · 12/09/2008 12:20

No, there is no need for brute force, just ask your Dr for a different antibiotic!! There are alternatives and they don't all task vile!!!!!

I think "brutalise" is a little harsh.

DD will not take ANY yummy, so it's in her milk or brutalisation all the way I'm afraid!

I agree with Green Monkies - Had EXACTLY the same problem and Paed said not to force just demand another better tasting one from the docs and explain the situation. Chances are he will bring it up anyway if he is gagging. Please do not force him to take it.

There are alternatives - i agree it is crazy how some taste so vile

GreenMonkies · 12/09/2008 12:33

LilRedWG, try putting something she does like, like yoghurt, in a syringe and give it to her in her hand. She may well throw it away at first, but eventually she'll have a go. Once she stops associating a med syringe with vile stuff being squirted into her mouth you should be able to give her meds just by handing her the syringe. No brutalisation required!

Report
SoupDragon · 12/09/2008 12:34

Put it in via a syringe in really small doses over, say, 15 minutes or so. Far less chance if it being spat out.

Wow, so rather than ask your GP for a more palatable medicine you chose to force feed him the vile one?

I don't understand!

Report
mejon · 13/09/2008 14:52

Getting an appointment to see a GP for an alternative might not be that simple though GreenMonkies.

I had to give DD the same foul tasting antibiotic medicine a few weeks ago and also came on here to see if there was anything I could do to make it more palatable. It was prescribed just before the Bank Holiday weekend and by the time I'd have got another appointment, the course would have been finished anyway. In the end we persevered with the syringe and got DD to swollow by blowing in her face - it was horrible to do but it worked.

From what I've read Fluclox/Flucloxacillin is a particular sort of antibiotic and those with experience of it who responded to my post did agree that it was a very unpleasant medicine with little alternative unfortunately (though I may be wrong there).

am far too late, but next time ask for suppositories

Report

My GP and Paed showed me how to force feed - when I objected the pointed out that it is far more important to actually get the drug down her when she needs it than to wait until there's another apoointment available to change it.
