Caring for a newly healed broken arm

Hi, need some advice about my 6yo dd. Dd broke her arm at the start of the school holidays. The break was horrendous. She snapped her ulna and radius and the bones displaced and overlapped leaving her arm mishapen. I feel sick thinking about it as I type. After some brilliant treatment at the hospital they managed to manipulate the bones under GA. Dd has been amazing and coped so well. Next week she is having the cast off (just in time to return for schoolShock ) I am a nervous wreck about her re-breaking it. She is a real tomboy and I'm really worried. I am looking for some advice of how I can help her look after her newly healed arm. is there things she shouldn't do? I will ask the dr but the appt isn't for another week and some advice would be appreciated. TIA.

It will likely feel stiff and sore once the cast is off -this is just because its not been used, generally not because of the cast itself

Was it pinned or just reset and cast?

DS had the same break to his arm last summer although they managed to pull it into place in A&E using gas and air. Thankfully i was not there!

The advice for him was no contact sports for a couple of months and that was about it. He was given one exercise which was to put his hands together as if praying and then lower both hands so the hands were at right angles to the arm. Apparently it hurt a lot to start with but soon everything loosened up again.

He was out of plaster mid June and playing rugby again in September, without incident all season! I was more worried than he was - it didn't bother him at all.

His arm was also bent somewhere it shouldn't bend. It was how he knew it was broken and not just sore. Makes me feel sick thinking about it too!!

I should add that his arm is absolutely fine now - no odd bend or anything!

Thanks all. Yes Owl think we worry more than our dc's do. What didn't help is all the people who have said 'oh its very likely it will rebreak. It happened to my Aunties Sisters 2nd Cousin within 5 seconds of the cast coming off!' Wink

Dd1 broke her arm about a year ago, had to have an op and have it pinned. We just made sure she avoided anything to physical for a couple of months, and she hasn't been on monkey bars since! Her arm's as good as new now.
