The nurse who was originally asked to start my DS on a heart medication queried the dosage and wouldn't give him the full dose to start with as she felt it was too high. She was overruled by the consultant in the end who had read a note from a telephone conversation another doctor had with cardiologist (who then went on leave and I am waiting to hear back from). Anyway this has stuck with me. I have looked at the dosage instructions and it is as was said in hospital 1mg per kilo of weight. My DS is 7 kilos so has 7 mg but has it three times a day. I am trying to work out if he should be having the 7mg spaced over three doses as he actually has 21mg in total a day. Can anyone help?? The official dose guidelines are below:
Oral: Children: Initial: 0.5 to 1 mg/kg/day in divided doses every 6 to 8 hours; titrate dosage upward every 3 to 5 days; usual dose: 2 to 4 mg/kg/day; higher doses may be needed; do not exceed 16 mg/kg/day
