My 17 day old DS has been jaundiced since birth (born at 37+4) but the midwives weren't particularly worried as he only has a bit of a yellow tinge. He's feeding well (ebf) and has put on weight (well over birth weight).

Because it's still not gone after 2 weeks they did a blood test today to check his bilirubin levels and they have called to say it is a bit high and they want to do further tests so I'm taking him to the hospital in the morning for more checks.

Has anyone had this, is there anything to worry about? any advice at all would be appreciated. I've looked on the nhs site and am scaring myself silly reading about brain damage and blood transfusions.

Both my ds' were jaundiced for the first month and we had to go into hospital for a urine sample - fun and games with a small baby.
Apparently, its more common in if the mother and father are rhesus neg.

ds1 had problems at birth too due to a placental abruption, so they kept him in for a few days on a lamp. DS2 was just prescribed lots of sunlight.

No further problems with either child.

Thank you, that's reassuring. The lady on the phone did mention he'd need to do a urine sample, quite how that is going to work is a mystery to me!
The midwife said that the fact that he's breastfed can prolong the jaundice. That's one they don't tell you about isn't it?
