Hey everyone. Just wanted to share this with you all, and see what you might have to say. So my little girl is 13 months now, and loves any type of cheesy creamy food. Was so happy when I found Hipp baby carbonara in small shop, instead of having to travel miles to buy cheesy food. Anyway, bought the last jar on shelf last Wednesday, she loved it, went back to the shop and yippee, they had two more jars which I scooped up straight away. She ate it yesterday. And since then..... has had the most watery stools ever, every nappy is leaking, and lots of gas, poor girl in pain. I went to open the other jar today, wait for it..... it was out of date BEFORE she was even born..... expired March 2013, was produced Sept 2011!!! Then I considered back to last week (and found the jar at the bottom of the bin outside) and yes they all the same March 2013. I AM DUMBFOUNDED. I spoke with doctor who agrees her sickness is from this jar (and probably still from last week too). She will be fine, just takes time to let it pass through her system. I obviously went mad at the shop owner, who was horrified and very sorry, and has offered me 'something' but I don't know what yet as I haven't been back to shop today. Thinking back, I bought the last jar last week, so they restocked the shelves with the same VERY out of date product. Not forgetting too that it contains egg, cream, cheese and ham. What do you all think?

I think the shop made a mistake. Amd maybe you should have checked the best before date.

I'd complain, but essentially just write it off as one of those things, if I'm honest. Easy for me to say I guess, though.

Always check the use by date before you buy.

Was the food from a discount store? They do have cheaper items because they are close to the sell by but it is a bit off to be selling well out of date.

Absolutely, I meant to say that about me checking dates too, normally would but because I was flying about doing this n that, it escaped me. grrrr. I did feel terrible sorry for shop owner, they were so upset too. And I was blaming her teething! Oops!

Unacceptable, I work in a shop, they should check dates before stocking the shelves, yes an item may occassionally slip through but to have some out of date already on the shelf and then restock with more out of date stuff is just neglegent.

I'd complain to their head office if possible.

It's a shame your daughter is not well but it is clearly a mistake on the part of the shop owner who has not date-checked properly and by you, who fed it to her without checking it. We all have a responsibility to check what we feed our children and can't just blame others when things go wrong.

I'm also surprised that a doctor would be so definite that her sickness was due to this, most GPs I know would say it was possible but difficult to say definitively

Obviously the shop shouldn't be stocking out of date food, and if it's a chain I would report to head office.

BUT - for a foodstuff that has a shelf life of two years, it's obviously completely packed with preservatives and so the fact that is contains egg, ham and cream etc is somewhat irrelevant.

Your baby will be fine but it really is easy to make cauli cheese and macaroni cheese etc.

Why do you have to travel miles to buy cheesy food? Does your small shop not also sell cheese?

Baby food over a year out of date is not on!! Yes you should check the label but, obviously, they shouldn't be selling it! I'd report them to the health thingy people at the council. (no really, i would).

does it matter if the OP uses jars? lets not all get too earth mothery, horses for courses and all that. the point is baby food should be safe for babies to consume. i'm pretty sure there is an onus on manufacturers/suppliers/retailers to ensure that.

it's not being earth mothery, it's just easier, cheaper and healthier to make that sort of food yourself
of course any food should be safe to consume- but sounds like the shop just made a mistake.

its easier for who? you? fair enough. doesn't mean its easier for everyone though. lots of people feed their children a varying diet, including jars. any food you purchase should be safe to eat, especially food specifically targeted towards those with lower immune systems, such as babies.

Not shocked but I'm a avid date checker why buying, not that it makes much difference as I found 3jars of cooking sauce in cupboard 2years out of date that my DD made me throw away.

Aren't shops allowed to sell out of date stuff but at reduced price and say reasons why.

i suppose so, some of the smaller ones do... but its usually a packet of crisps that's a month at most not baby food over a year out of date. no one would buy it.

Would it not be a best before date though? If it can be stored for two years and is ambient I would have thought it may have lost taste/texture but wouldn't actually be dangerous.

No ideal though obviously.

its was over a year out of date! a year! and as for it being a mistake on the shops behalf, as everyone's said it's 'in date' for about two years so how have they not realised they have had said jars hanging about for somewhere in the region of three years??!

I agree it's more likely to be loss of quality rather than actually dangerous
