Motilium/Domperidone - anyone been told to stop?

Ds (4) takes Domperidone and Ranitidine for reflux.

His reflux is the best it has ever been, although he still has some nights where he is struggling.

We saw his paed today and he said that we would need to wean ds off domperidone as it has been associated with heart arrhythmias.

Has anyone else had to do this? Has your/ your dc's reflux got worse? Were you/they prescribed anything else?

Thanks.

Sorry I can't answer your question but have a question for you if you don't mind?
My ds is 10 and has suffered with reflux on & off forever. It is worse now than it has ever been. We have been to docs & they have given ranitidine & omeprozole- neither of which have had much effect. DS used to have lots if acid reflux but lately it's more regurgitated food. Is this the case with your Ds? Does the domperidone help with this? What did the doc say the long term options are if they stop the meds & the reflux is still a problem? My DS is sick apprix 20 times everday. It is really starting to impact terribly on his life but the GP is so reluctant to do anything!

With ds a fundoplication was mentioned (as he has low muscle tone and is at risk of aspirating reflux into his lungs) - this is an operation to create a new 'sphincter' at the top of the stomach. We tried Gaviscon, omeprazole and lansosprazole before we settled on a combo of ranitidine and domperidone.

Now ds can't take domperidone I am not sure what we will do.

Ds has had bouts of vomiting, where he will reflux up to 20 times in a day, but these are few.

I would ask your gp to refer your ds on, as it doesn't sound as though they are providing much help. Your poor ds must be exhausted by it. I would also make sure he gets his teeth checked regularly - ds has had to have 4 teeth removed due to a combination reflux and low enamel on his teeth.

good luck with it all.

Thank you haseyjane, my DS certainly is exhausted by it all, he has recently taken to begging to to let him have an operation to get it sorted. I hope you are able to find something that works for you without the possible side effects if domperidone, wishing your DS all the best. X

Your poor ds.

I started the same thread on sn children and a poster called missbluebird posted the following reply

We changed from domperidone to erythromycin (an antibiotic which has side effect of stomach emptying). Our consultant told us it is the most recent recommendation for reflux. Only need a really low dose. It works brilliantly and much less side effects than the domperidone.

We take it alongside omezaprole which reduces stomach acid.

I am going to ask ds's paed about this, it might be worth asking your gp to try it.

good luck.

I'm not a child but an adult with delayed stomach emptying and reflux. Domperidone is the only thing that helps me and even then, it's not a lot. It seems like there is much debate over its safety. I know the FDA has banned it completely in the States. My gastroenterologist feels that it can be used safely in patients without heart problems. I had to have an ECG first though.
