My 5 year old is getting a bit porky

I have two sons, aged 7 and 5. Eldest is lean and tall. My youngest is undoubtedly developing a tummy.

I'm not planning to put him on a diet as such, but I am planning to increase his daily activity levels.

Does this sound reasonable? He had an op around 3 months ago so was laid up for a few weeks but is fine now. He then badly sprained his ankle so admittedly he hasn't been as active as he could have been over the last few months.

I know I shouldn't compare but his brother doesn't stop moving, eats like a horse but doesn't have a sweet tooth. Younger son has a very sweet tooth and just doesn't move as much as his brother.

I'm thinking proper long walks, banning sweets (I'm sure he has a secret stash) and as much swimming as I can squeeze in.

He seems fine everywhere else - it is just his tummy.

He could be gearing up for a growth spurt- some kids get a tummy or bit of puppy fat, then shoot up and look more proportionate.

But yes, upping his exercise is a great idea. Something organised like martial arts so he has something regular to go to? Could you find out if there are any holiday courses at nearby leisure centres? There's nearly always football, crash swimming courses, dance, track...

I had pondered a growth spurt. I thought he was quite short for his age but his best buddy is exceptionally tall.

Martial arts are a great idea. I think he'd enjoy that, as it would his brother. Can you recommend any?

He'd also enjoy dance I think so I might see if I can find something like street dance.
