Hi dd1 is 10. She complained of lump on her gum last night and this morning it was quite obviously swollen with a white dot in the centre. Its at the top of her gum above her canine teeth. I immediately thougt abscess and took her to dentist. Dentist says its her side canine dropping down and the white dot is the tooth however he didnt sound too convinced. Can the gums swell like this with upper canines? He said wait til monday amd if no better to go back but we fly to usa next wed so dont really want this dragging on

Perfectly normal for the gum to look swollen when the permanent canine is erupting. The teeth develop in a large fluid filled follicle which causes the bone to bulge as the tooth moves down into the mouth. Have a feel of it it should feel very firm and smooth and the skin looks stretched. Make sure she has painkillers and get her to rinse with hot salt water. If it is an abscess and it is pointing or coming to a head (like a spot) then pus will discharge and relieve the pain. Its unlikely to be an abscess if the teeth in that area are all healthy.

NB look at the image rather than all the stuff about impaction it doesn't mean the tooth is impacted I just found an image that may look similar.

Thanks yes it does look like that except it deems to have an ulcer where skin is stretched. Yes we are doing salt water
