Hi all I hope I can get some advice as to why my 2 year old is not walking properly. He was walking fine up until last week and then he started crying unless I pick him up. Took him to GP who sent me to A&E. They said it could possibly occurred after having a cold and told me to give him ibuprofen. 3 days later he wasnt any better so I took him back to A&E and then again 2 days later. I still dont know what is wrong with him and neither do the hospital. he will pull himself up on the furniture but for the most he just crawls or lays on his bed until I carry him. Struggling to understand what has happened to him. Has anyone else experienced this? thank you

When I was about 5yo, I had flu. I couldn't walk properly afterwards for about 2 weeks. I have no idea why this happened, but it did eventually go away.

Are you still in hospital? What tests have they run? Have they x-rayed?

My ds had something similar after a virus. Fluid around the joint. It was diagnosed after an ultrasound. I will look up the name.

My ds had Transient synovitis.

Hi he only ever attended A&E for about 6 hours at a time. They took blood and x rayed his foot, hip and knee but could not find anything and just discharged us.

irritable hip? the common name for transient synovitis (sp?)

my then 18mo had it and both my sister and I had it as children. I had to carry my dd around mostly. (as well as her then month old sister).

it is basically a virus that spreads into the hip joint and will go away. dd1 could stand but not really walk. hips hurt when flexing them.

the spoke about my son having something like this but I would have thought they could diagnose it?

With my son they diagnosed it on ultrasound. They didn't bother doing an x-ray.

they diagnosed it be eliminating other stuff for us. it is not serious (although as an adult I'd find it pretty traumatic tbh!) and they don't seem worried about it.

If they can't diagnose it, go back to hospital and insist he is diagnosed.
Diagnosis by elimination sounds like BS to me.

I did ask about Ultrasound but the doctor said they had to know what they were looking for to ultrasound him and they didnt. I am going to my GP tomorrow and will get her to refer me to a different hospital. Are there any that have very good paediatric departments since I dont want him going through another round of x rays and blood tests unnecessarily - it is so upsetting for him and he is beginning to dislike anyone coming near him even in shops due to his experience over the last few days
