Do you give your child supplements?

DS is 2.3, he's tall for his age but completely in proportion to his weight.
Should I be giving him any vitamins or anything?
I know my nan used to be obsessed with giving us cod liver oil when we were small but I don't really know what for!
Is this something all the good parents are doing and I've missed? Wink

As long as he is eating a balanced diet then I wouldn't worry about supplements

Just the NHS Healthy Start Vitamins from DD's Minor Ailments Pharmacist. £2.88 per bottle.

I give a vitamin supplement when I remember because I'm paranoid about but D deficiency, no other reason.

So 2 out of 3 do so far!

Do you have any opinions on Omega 3 for creating young Einsteins??

As far as I know, Omega supplements are useless. It seems to be eating oily fish that is of benefit.

My daughter is now 12 and never had any vitamins. She loves veggies, will eat fruit and we manage to work our way around other things she's difficult with though. She's fairly bright and school reckon she's capable of B, A & A*s in a couple of subjects, and had never had antibiotics, and has got their through diet alone.

Only fish oil for behaviour (don't think it worked).

Multivitamin daily (DC 3 &5) mainly for vit D but also because they are fussy veg haters.

I give a vitamin supplement to ds1, he has a crap diet and is going through a phase of not liking any vegetables!

I figured it made sense!

Vit D (I am low and I suspect they are too - they don't even have a playground at school that's open to the sky - it's covered so even less sunlight than for most UK kids which is already not enough)

Probiotics to try to tackle repeated repeated repeated bloody vomiting bugs.

Iron supplement when I remember.

Vit D in winter.

I give a probiotic as it helps with DS1's constipation. DS2 has a multi vitamin/calcium as he is dairy-free and misses out on some natural vits and minerals.

This thread is self selecting though, op. Parents who don't use supplements are less likely to bother to post.

We occasionally use omegas, zinc and vit d. (Ds1 has add, and we live in the frozen north where we wear snow suits for 6 mos of the year). We also use magnesium in the form of Epsom salts.

I have two girls who occasionally chew on a zinc or whatever, they take nothing routinely. School asked us if we had started druggin Ds when we started him on omegas, zinc and magnesium. They said he was like a completely different child.

According to my HV the advice at the moment is for all under 5s to have a daily dose of A C & D

I give DS Vitamin D although he wears shorts year round and the school he goes to is hard core re outdoors and exercise. It has to be monsoon-like rain before they are kept in. So he probably doesn't really need it, however he is very tall so I do it to be on the safe side.
Asda do Vit D tabs for children, bottle of 30 for £1. They are fruit flavoured and chewable.
I sometimes give him a multi vitamin with iron for a month if he starts looking a bit pale. I prefer to give him whole (fresh green veg) foods because they are just a better way of getting vits and minerals into them.
