Is it chicken pox?

My 17 mo DS had a faint pin prick rash all under his skin on Friday and on Sat am we noticed a couple of spots (no heads) on his face. This am he woke with quite a few more spots on his face (15-20ish) but none anywhere else. They're not itchy, he's not ill, doesn't have a fever and is eating well. A friend suggested it might be chicken pox, which I'm ashamed to say, hadn't even occurred to me! If it is chicken pox, I'm assuming he can't go to nursery tomorrow? Do I take him to docs to confirm? Thanks for any advice!

Chicken pox usually look like little blisters. Let the dr check him over.

I wouldn't describe CP as a pin prick rash. CP spots are bigger and more distinct and individual even before they scab over.

Thanks both. The pin prick under skin rash seems to have gone, just left with bright red individual spots on face now. Just thought chicken pox were supposed to start on trunk and DS would seem ill...

My 10 month old's chicken pox started yesterday with a little area of small rash spots, then more spots without blisters until this morning when they all had heads on and started to blister. He was well in himself until this morning. Now he's unwell and I feel so sorry for him.

I think your nursery will want a confirmation one way or another before accepting him in.

CP doesn't always start on the trunk, i have seen it many times over the years working in a nursery:

Case 1: Sent a child home with a high temp, on pick up i pointed out a odd spot on the back of the leg, CP confirmed.

Case 2: Child had red spots in hair line, CP confirmed.

Case 3: Found red spots when changing nappy, first thought was nappy rash, put sudo on them, next change it def wasn;t a nappy rash Blush CP confirmed.

Any way my point is it can start any where .......

Hope your lo is ok Smile

My twins had chicken pox as babies and were not particularly unwell in themselves. The pharmacist was able to confirm chicken pox from the spots, which are more like insect bites, than pin pricks. If it is CP, nursery will definitely be out. It's pretty infectious.

Thanks all! Will take him to GP tomorrow to confirm either way.
