since yesterday my daughter (2.5) has slept a stupid amount of time. for the past cou0ple of days shes had a nasty cold which has made her feel very sorry for herself. yesterday afternoon she went down at 5 for what i thought was a late nap. she woke twice breiefly and did not get up until 10 am this morning. she then asked to go to bed at 3pm, for what i though was a normal nap but she is still asleep now. so far in the past 24 hours shes only spent 5 of them awake. she is taking little fluid and food as she is asleep so much so today she has only had breakfast we planned to give her some dinner when we got back but she wanted to go to bed instead.
she also has a sleep disorder meaning she is on a ventilator while asleep. in all manner of speaking her sleep disorder doesnt seem to be the cause of her sleeping so much as she is very stable currently (heart rate, oxygen levels etc) she has an open ward access at our local hospital but for emergencies with her sleep problem. i feel a bit daft phoning nhs direct up and saying my 2 year old is sleeping too much, any ideas i really dont want her to be sleeping all night til late morning again x

I'd be concerned that she might be getting dehydrated now. If you phone Nhs direct then they'll tell you to go to A&E (they always seem to with us) personally after this long I'd be calling Out of hours GP or going to A&E I'm afraid.

Hope she's better soon.

She is at risk of dehydration if she has been sleeping for such long periods. Has she been drinking much? How is her wee?

I would wake her for dinner and fluids & see how she is. If she is drowsy or difficult to keep awake I could take her to A&E.

I think you need to get her checked out. Does she have a fever? How much is she peeing?

In all honesty even with an otherwise well child I would be concerned if they'd slept that many hours. I think I would seek medical advice even if her signs seem good- have you rung NHS direct?

I too would get her checked out. I've just posted on a very similar thread so maybe there is a nasty bug at the moment making small children sleepy. But when my DS slept much more than usual, it was a serious infection requiring hospitalisation (and even simple dehydration is a worry in small children) so it's always worth checking.

thankyou for your replies guys. i phoned nhs direct yesterday evening and they advised me to phone out of hours. she was see at our local primary care and given a full 'mot'. she just has a simple viral bug but with her exsisting condition the symptoms such as sleeping and not wanting to eat etc are showing alot more. we are fine to let her sleep it off, and if she is not better in a week then we are to seek further advice. i felt kinda daft at first as there were so many sick babies in the waiting room but aparently she was put in as an emergency.

So glad you got her checked out and she just has a bug. Don't feel bad about being seen - if the doctors felt it was worth an MOT just to make sure she was ok, then it was definitely worth going.
