Quarantine sibling of child with chicken pox? Quick advice needed, please!

DS1 (3.9) came out in chicken pox on Friday morning. DS2 (10.5 months) is fine just now, but I'm expecting it in about 2 weeks, going by what many others have said. But in the meantime, should I keep him out of his swimming lesson tomorrow? If I do, he'll miss probably 4 weeks' worth. It's a lot of money for us to lose, but he must be infectious. I'm pretty sure it's the right thing to do, but guess I'm asking for the push to confirm...

Thanks in advance!

He is unlikely to be infectious until a few days before he gets spots. I would take him as the chances are low of him being infectious at the moment, unless he was also exposed to the same original source. He may not develop the pox at all too, though probably fairly likely he will. If he is unwell in any way then better stay away as could be the early signs, but otherwise keep going with life for him.

Thanks for the advice. Having a re-think along those lines myself. Will see how he is in the morning, at any rate.

The incubation period is 10-21 days but he would only be infectious for 1-2 days before his spots came out so would not be infectious at this stage (unless he was exposed at the same time). He may not get it at all so i would continue as normal until he shows signs of infection

With dd2 and dd3, we only kept dd3 at home when she was spiking ridiculusly high temps 4 days before the spots appeared (41.2!) Dr google said this was normal prior to the appearance of spots (although on day 3 I was beginning to worry that I was a slack mother and should have seen the doc when day 4 the spots appeared!)

Good luck it's no fun we have christmas and new year last year! (always timed to perfection in this house!)

Thanks, all. DS2 is still fine this morning, so I'll take him along. DH and I will be splitting the time off from work between us with DS1 this week, and will look forward to doing the same again in a couple of weeks with DS2!

I've only been back at work from maternity leave for 6 weeks. Good thing I saved some annual leave; too bad it won't be enough. Ah well. At least it'll be out of the way.
