HELP! Urgently needed book for 5 y/o girl's birthday present

I am going to sound like the world's worst aunt here but I'm not sure what phase my niece is going through at the moment (ballet, ponies, fairies?) but I'm looking for a lovely "generic" book I can pop in the post to her.

How about a cookery book? There are lots of good ones on the market for 5 year olds. My son love the Annabel Karmel cookery book. I think its published by Dorling Kindersley.

there is a lovely book called 'love, Splat' that my dd got for her birthday. tis about a cat in love.!!!

What is you're nieces name - I like to buy book with them as the main charater ie Lila Pirate, Amelia Badelia, Sophie's farm, etc etc

Clarice Bean picture books. More complex than most picture books.

Or very simple chapter books. Dick King Smith Sophie stories, say.

Or classics they might start growinng into. Moomintroll. Anything by Astrid Lindgren which isn't Pippi Longstocking (as many people already have that).
