I have already been on Booksleuth forum and nobody has replied to me ... anyway this was a book of short stories that I am sure was used as a reader in school, this was in the 70's but I think this book was older than that.
I can only remember two of the stories - a merry go round horse coming to life and having an adventure and a mouse that came out of its hole when it saw jam dripping in the kitchen.
This is so little to go on I know but I have always wondered about this book as I remember loving the stories. I hope that Mnetters can beat the booksleuthers!!

I think this was Wide Range Readers, Blue Book 1. When I was in the top year of infants in early 1960's I had apparently read all the books in my classroom and was sent upstairs to the bottom junior class to borrow from them; I read the story about the mouse and the jam to the class (to show off my advanced reading skills! We'll leave my abysmal maths ability out of it, thank you)
It starts:
There was an old woman who made some strawberry jam. She stirred it and she stirred it, and when it was cooked, she poured it into some clean shining jam jars. There were ten clean shining jam jars, and the jam went plop plop ploppety plop until the first jar was full ..." etc. Not word perfect, but I remember it very well.
I remember the roundabout horse story vaguely too. There are copies listed on AbeBooks, but some seem to be later editions so may not include all the same stories.

Lucifera thank you so much for this, I may be a little PMT and glass of wine worse for wear but this brings a wee tear to my eye as I have remembered this book for so long but never had any idea what it was
.. I was a really good reader as well at primary and can also remember being asked to read in front of others. The other book I remember at this time which was 'old' was 'a book for a nook' do you know it. I am going to order that one as well and have a good old wallow in nostagia!
Thanks again, yay for Mumsnetters!

well I hope it is the right book! I'm fairly sure but not 100% ... if you get it, let me know! No I don't recall "A Book for a nook".

Have ordered it and funnily enough it is coming from Northern Ireland where I lived when I was at Primary. I hope it is the right book too - will be so weird to see it again and will be so nice to read the stories to DS. Will let you know!
