We're due to see the stage play next month, but haven't yet read the book...

Anyone? Something to do with a curse?

Set on one of the Scilly Islands. About a boy and a girl (about 9?) who befriend an old man who is shunned by the rest of the community because they think he's mad. Anyhooo...turns out that he used to live on another island (Bryher) but that had to be abandoned when the water dried up. And he reckoned that happened because they killed a herd (school/shoal?) of narwhal who got beached on the island, for food and oil. So the island was cursed. And when narwhal get washed up again, the boy and girl and the old gammer manage to persuade the islander not to kill them but to help them get free. So lifting the curse.

But.... tis a lovely wondrous book and well worth a read.

I love his books.
