I started reading Roald Dahl to dd at this age. We started with Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and have since read Fantastic Mr Fox, Georges Marvelous Medicine, The Witches and the BFG. Some parts of them are really quite scary (whatever posessed me to read her the witches I'll never know) but so far she LOVES them, and its a nice way to introduce chapter books. You can get really nice editions with colour illustrations too, our Charlie was only 4 quid from TK Maxx and is a lovely one.

Even if it is too young for now, you can keep it and give it too him in a couple of years. Books never go out of date.

I think I was started off on The Twits and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. They are a bit scary but that's part of the wonder. The BFG came quite early in my Roald Dahl days too.

You've made me all nostalgic, I shall have to dig them out at my mum's!

some are better for younger children than others...read them all yourself first and you'll see...!

I think 'The Twits' is the best one to start with. Children love the disgustingness of it (!) It has very short chapters so it's easy just to read them a little bit at a time.

Both of mine were badly scared by Dahl until they were about 6/7. Either they are particularly wimpy or they were too young before then.
