Books to read to DD aged 12

My question is inspired by the "Do you read to your children" - I did do and still do for dd2 who is 7 but I don't for dd1 who is just 12.
I would like to start again - she is a good reader and reads a lot. I would like to read books to her "above" what she can read herself.
does anyone have any suggestions?

Yes, those two definitely. I am planning to read A Christmas Carol to my 11 & 8 year olds over the couple of weeks before Christmas. What about Anne of Green Gables if she hasn't read it already? And definitely Little Women if she hasn't read that. Or I Capture the Castle? Sometimes I pick a book that is well within DD1's reading capabilities but she thinks she isn't going to like - often after a chapter or two she takes it off me and goes off to finish it herself.

My ds, aged 11, loved Animal Farm (too lazy to read it himself), A Christmas Carol and Great Expectations. Oliver Twist is next.

This is a good thread. I still read to my nine-year-old, but my 13-year-old sacked me when he was six.

I'd love to read to them both together. Dickens sounds like a great idea.

I have to confess I can't cope with AT now (hides head in shame at defection to sci-fi) but I loved CYFH & the Eustace Diamonds as a teenager.
