Is Marley & Me suitable for a 10 year old?

My DD is just 10 and doesn't read alot.

Someone recently gave me a copy of Marley & Me and it seems to have captured DDs interest.

I don't want to discourage her enthusiasm to read it as getting her to read anything is a miracle.

I haven't read it so I wondered if anyone had and if it's suitable.

Any thoughts?

If its the one about the dog, I have read this, not very good memory sorry, but I am sure it wouold be fine for a 10yr old.
funny story and sad in some places too. iirc

I read it a while back. It's a compendium of his newspaper articles for his local rag.

Iirc it's got some references to sex, and some quite adult themes (wife's PND).

Could you skim through it first to see what you think?

I can't think of anything in it that wouldn't be - there might be a couple of references to marital relations, but no actual description iirc... and i was probably reading jilly cooper by then...
if she likes that sort of thing, the joyce stranger books are probably a good steer...

Marley & Me is hilarious, I think a 10-year-old would be ok to read it. It does have references to "adult" themes such as her having a really rough pregnancy etc. I haven't read all of it, just dipped in and out of it.

I am sure there is a children's version. DD 11 adored the book (she was 10 when she read it) and I think it's one of her favorite books and her best friends

I've read this-not sure if I'd be happy letting my 10 yo read the "adult" version (there is a child's edition). I cried at the end too .

The adult version is riddled with the F word - get the child's version which has been edited to make it suitable. NB also I cried buckets at the end - if your DD is sensitive / you have dogs of your own you might want to warn her it is a sad ending...

Excellent, I didn't know there was a children's version. Thanks so much - I will nip off to amazon immediately!
