Any recommendations for books for children aged 9-12 that are funny?

DS is not keen on adventure/fantasy/wizards etc - "I like books that make me laugh". He's a pretty competent reader.

Roald Dahl, if he has a whacky sense of humour, - my DD loved these.

Yes, he loves Roald Dahl and I think has read all of his books. He also loves:

Horrid Henry
Captain Underpants
Jeremy Strong

but has outgrown these and is looking for something a bit "meatier" - Harry Potter type level but funny IYKWIM.

oh, not sure then,

dd is now reading some of the jaqueline wilson stuff, not a very high level but as she's educated in Portuguese I'm happy as long as she's reading in English.

Will have a look at what's lying around her bedroom but suspect your ds needs something a bit more challenging.

There is a brilliant kids author Called Michael Lawrence who writes very funny books for good readers from about 10 up.

"The Snottle" (about a snot like creature found in a dump)

"Nudey Doodie" (ABout a boy who keeps finding himself without any clothes on)

"The Toilet of doom" and "The killer underpants" I haven't read but my daughter and my nephew thought they were hilarious.

There are others but you would need to go on amazon to find them.

What about Helen Cresswell - Ordinary Jack, Bagthorpes Unlimited, lots of others. Used to make me laugh when I was a kid

And maybe too young (is your DS 9 or 12?), but Professor Branestawm, also the Dribblesome Teapots (by Norman Hunter as well) still makes me LOL even now.

Ah, and I know it is both adventure and fantasy, but . . . has your ds tried the How to Train your Dragon books by Cressida Cowell - very, very funny IMO

I just asked ds and he said Grk and Clarice Bean. He also said Buster Baylis but admits that this is an easy read for book fans at this age.
If your ds is a good reader he might be ready for some vintage comedy. Ds adores Jennings, Just William and Molesworth, all full of puns and silliness.
He also liked Five Children and It recently although had to be persuaded to get started.
He also says that although Percy Jackson is adventure/fantasy, it is very witty and amusing.

DD2 (11) loves those Cressida Cowell books too but I must admit, I think they are a bit "young" for her now.

"Superfudge" by Judy Blume is obviously very American and has dated a bit but it still makes me laugh. "Holes" is great but for the higher end of your age spectrum think. There is a fab film version of it too.

Cressida Cowell is very funny - we all like them and quote them at each other all the time (me, dp and dd12 and ds7)

Probably out of print, but Abebooks are bound to have copies of Jennings, which he might well find funny.

Jennings has been reprinted by a small publishing house Stella, House of Stratos or something similar. You can get them via Amazon although it tends not to be a quick turnaround.
