Hi, I have a toddler and know nothing about what 5-year-olds like reading, but I'd like to get a fun and perhaps crazy book as a gift for a boy aged 5. Maybe something about monsters or dragons or pirates - or all three! Can you recommend anything brilliant?

Is he 5 nearly 6 or only just 5? If an older 5, what about 'How to Train your Dragon' by Cressida Cowell. Probably one for parents to read to him right now, but a fantastic story, and has dragons, pirates and vikings.

He's 5 today! I like the sound of this one, so I'll have a look in the bookshops.

Thanks!

Michael Morpurgo is a brilliant author! I think he also does an age range for 5/6yr olds!

you can try typing the childs name into the search box on amazon, then narrowing the choices down to books>childrens books> ages 3-5 (or whatever) and see what comes up? its nice to have a book with 'them' as the star iyswim

doesnt always turn much up, but have gotten some nice presents that way.

There is a lovely little series of Gaskitt family books by Allen Ahlberg - I think "The Man who wore all of his clothes" and "The Woman who won everything" are two of them. Lovely pictures, not in the slightest bit cloying and lovely to read aloud.

In my experience, some boys can be a bit less keen on story books. We have some great flap books (not baby-style ones) from Dorling Kindersley - underground science and one about the natural world - they are also huge hits here.
