unusual books for a 1 yr old

My baby is starting to show a fascination for books, but all the ones we have are either a bit long, or cloth books with three pages which I'm now bored of. We both like 'the babys catalogue', especily since it has cotton nappies and a variety of home situations (although no one parent families, which is odd). We could maybe do with a book about giving up dummies, and a good book of childrens poems (ideally including lewis carrol and edward lear)

Any ideas?

Not exactly what you asked for, but at 1 year old, they are the perfect age for the that's not my series of books

which three of mine have adored.

These books have no words but good pictures and I think she may be a single mother as there are no other parents around. HTH

do you go the library they ususally have loads of books for sale in the kids section usually

My dd is also a huge fan of The Baby's Catalogue. She loves Shirley Hughes' Nursery Collection (beautifully illustrated and plenty of rhyming) and Apple Pear Orange Bear by Emily Gravett.

Other favourites are : Olivia by Ian Falconer, Rod Campbell's "Buster" books, The Duck in the Truck by Jez Alborough and How to Catch a Star by Oliver Jeffers.

We've a copy of Hutchison Treasury of Children's Poetry which has tons in it, including Carrol's "The Walrus and the Carpenter" and Lear's "There Was An Old Man With A Beard". Some lovely illustrations too.

Satoshi Kitamura's Dog is Dirty/Cat is Sleepy/Squirrel is Hungry etc. series is nice, with a non-fluffy style of illustration.

Masses of children's anthologies around - catering for all kinds of tastes. Look in library or big bookshop and see what appeals - recommendations mightn't get at what you'd like personally.
