kindle books for young children...

following on from my previous question about books for holidays with my 5yr old dd I was wondering id anyone had used a kindle (or maybe kindle fire as the pictures would then be colour) with a 5yr old. I was thinking I could then download a range of books and it would be far less to pack/cart around.
Is there a good range of kindle books for children and are the illustrations good etc - engaging enough to make them want to read it?
