I don't have a 9 yr old but am thinking back to what I read at that age (an avid reader).

Eva Ibbotson's books - she did some younger ones and a young teen type which have more romance in but are very funny and well written. Something like A Countess Below Stairs.

Michelle Magorian - she of Goodnight Mr Tom fame did some great books including A Little Love Song (addresses teen pregnancy/sex in a non-graphic and sensible way).

If she likes Famous Five then Malcolm Saville's Lone Pine series is sure to go down well (and the books are better written than EB's).

Action Adventures such as John Buchan's 39 Steps.

School stories - Chalet School series, Dimsie series, Trebizon series and Elsie Oxenham's books about The Abbey. Some of these are quite hard to obtain but some paperbacks can still be bought on-line and found in second hand shops.

Classics such as: Daddy Long Legs and Dear Enemy; LM Montgomery's Emily of New Moon and Anne of Green Gable books; LM Alcott's Little Women series plus Old Fashioned Girl, Eight Cousins and Rose in Bloom.

I was reading some Austen at this point too, also Bronte sister but was too immature to understand and appreciate the latter.

If you want vampires etc then I haven't got a clue, sorry.

These are grey suggestions - am bookmarking this thread.

Dd1 enjoying Northern Lights at the moment. Also Cordelia funke - book about dragons? Unicorns? Something like that...

Micheal morpurgo

Yy to Eva Ibbotson particularly Journey to the River sea

She slso really likes Greek myths and German fairytales, loves those books full of different stories.

Cordelia Funke wrote Inkheart I think TheBogQueen.

I loved series where I could really get to know the characters like Babysitter's Club.

Judy Bloom and Lois Lowry were also favourites.

My younger sister liked the Angels Unlimited series.

My DD (nearly 9) has recently loved:
The Penderwicks by Jeanne Birdsall
The Secret Hen House Theatre by Helen Peters
The Wolves of Willoughby Chase - Joan Aiken
The Silver Sword - Ian Serralier

So many wonderful books, both classic and recent, for this age.

Charlotte Sometimes, Moondial (if you can get a copy second hand as it is out of print but I loved it), A Traveler in Time by Alison Uttley, Noel Streatfield, Charlotte's Web, any Dick King Smith, Holly Webb stuff, the Ottoline books probably (not seen them but people have recommended them on here before)

Thanks for these suggestions.

I have nearly 9 yr old twin DDs, both avid readers & sometimes find it hard to to come up with good books for them.

I tend to make suggestions based on recommendations by Mnetters or the Sunday Times. We then read the reviews on Amazon & if the books appeal to them I'll order them.

DTD2 is working her way through the Narnia Chronicles while DTD1 has just finished Flora & Ulysses and is now reading The Rooftoppers (which she said she accidentally downloaded to my kindleWink)

Can I suggest The Glass Bird Girl and The Snow Merchant which we've bought to read later.
