My DS reads a lot, I think his favourite book is the Guinness Book of Records, but he reads fiction and history also.

I have ordered him this for his birthday, because he likes maths:

Any suggestions for other slightly quirky books that he might like?

My sister cruised through a lot of Sherlock Holmes at about that age. Logic and history?

History fiction books - the Time Rider series by Alex Scarrow, Gods and Warriors by Michelle Paver (Bronze age Greece), Soldier Dog by Sam Angus (WW1), A Beautiful Lie (creation of Pakistan),

Quirky books: Information is Beautiful by David McCandless - a fact book but in graphic design style. Some parts may be advanced for an 11 year old but it is beautiful and great for starting discussions

I've reviewed most of these on my website //www.booksteensandmagazines.com which aims at making it easier to find reading material for secondary school children.

I was doing some research for my website and found these talks at Hay about maths for children by people who have written maths books and thought of you. Here's the link if you want to check it out: www.hayfestival.com/search.aspx?SearchTerm=Maths&SearchTerm_Vldt=%5Breq%5D%5Blen%3D2%5D%5Bblankalert%3DPlease+enter+text+to+search%21%5D

50 Amazing Things Kids Need to Know About Maths - Anne Rooney, Quercus, 2011 (OK, I wrote it, but it is the kind of thing he might like!)

DS is a bit younger and interested in maths too. He's reading How to train your brain to be a maths genius. We got it from the library.
