May Chapter book of the month: Captain Underpants and the Terrifying Return of Tippy Tinkletrousers

What a great title for our May Chapter book of the month: a new adventure from everyone's favourite Y-front clad Superhero Captain Underpants. The ninth book in the series sees the return of Captain Poopypants, now known as Tippy Tinkletrousers who is out for revenge on those who mocked his previous name. It's up to George, Harold and Captain U to stop him...

If your dcs are already Captain Underpants fans, or if you think they would like to meet him then find out more and apply for one of fifty free copies. If you are one of the lucky fifty, we do ask that you join the discussion on this thread and let us know what your dcs think of the book.

I love Captain Underpants and so does ds (8) but even if he didn't I'd still read them Blush.

I still think back fondly to year 2 when ds drew a picture of Professor Poopypants and took it to school to give to his teacher Grin

DS who is now 11 used to read them when he was about 7-8 and he thought they were hilarious. It definitively helped him to get interested in reading books for himself in his free time. Now his younger sister who is 8 has discovered them and laughing her head off. She recently used one of the books for a book review homework.

DS (7) loves Captain Underpants. He'll be pleased to learn there's a new one out.

Musu - I've never tried reading one myself - maybe I should!

Just found out we've got a copy - thank you! DS will be very pleased as we borrowed it from the library at the weekend, and he's read it a couple of times already. I read it too, on musu's recommendation, and I did enjoy it - definitely some bits in it that I suspect will have gone over DS's head. I really liked the explanation of the grandfather paradox (aka the banana cream pie paradox).

Got DS to write a review of the book:

In Captain Underpants 9th epic novel Tippy Tinkletrousers goes back five years where four bullies were being nasty and George and Harold were trying to stop the bullies.

The bullies are nasty and powerful. Tippy Tinkletrousers is half good - half bad. George and Harold are good, sly and clever.

I liked it when Tippy accidentally shot ice at his feet. I also liked it when Captain Underpants sat on a swing and said "Yo, Tippy Tip. Can I have some ice please?"

---
Reading the book has made him remember how much he likes Captain Underpants, and he has borrowed five of them from the library today.

We've just found out from Scholastic that the there has been a delay in sending the books out but they are definitely going out over the next couple of days. Do come back and let us know when you've had chance to read.

We've just borrowed the sequel from the library too, and it's also really good. DS says:

I like captain underpants because it is funny. I like the way the author uses pants in jokes for example, I like the bit where captain underpants pulled away the trousers of Tippy tinkletrousers?s robo suit and left it with only its pants on.
I also liked the song about someone being cleverer than someone else although I didn?t get the point of it: It had poo-poo and wee-wee in it!
I like there being three tippy tinkletrousers because they were all rude once and then one was rude to another.
I liked tippy tinkletrousers being defeated when he fell in banana peels then fell in tar, caught fire and boulders fell on his head.

I read it too, and was much amused by the explanations of the origins of the universe and of the last ice age. Pretty sure DS didn't get the jokes - hopefully he'll read them again in a couple of years and appreciate them on a whole new level!

Our copy has arrived and DS (7) is a big Captain Underpants fan so he's read it already. His comments "It's very very very good, and funny" I asked what was his favourite bit but he said he liked it all! A big thumbs up from him anyway. I also found his four year old sister sitting on the stairs having a look at it so I think the appeal is going to last :) Thanks very much mumsnet!

We were lucky enough to win a copy, and I have to say, as soon as my daughter saw the way the pictures were drawn she started laughing! It now has a waiting list around the family of eager readers wanting to read the book, Captain Underpants is a hero in our house! Thank you mumsnet! x

Thanks so much for the Captain Underpants book. My son has quite a few of the series. He is now 10 and still loves Captain Underpants so was very excited when the new book popped through the door. He has read about 2/3's of the book now and he says it is really good and really funny. He says thank you very much Mumsnet! :)

We've just finished reading the Captain Underpants book which we won. We can't believe we've never read any of the books in this series before - it's so funny and we love the animation and story. All the other books in the series have now been added to gift list for birthday/christmas :)

Dd2 aged 7 is adamant that she doesn't like this book. It's a boys book apparently. However, she read it over half term. She loved the flip pages and was caught laughing. She is going to donate it to her class so that the 'boys' can read it.

She's not much of a reader, so it was great to see her read it so quickly, laughing along as she read. It's not a book she would have chosen herself, so I'm really pleased that she has seen that a book doesn't need to be a girls book to be enjoyable. Thank you mumsnet for sending us a copy

My DS is still reading this book but is loving it. He thinks it is very funny, especially when Captain Underpants wears a nappy, and it's got lots of action. He now wants me to get him the rest of the books in the series as he is enjoying it so much.

DD1(8) and DD2(6) fought over who was going to read this first. DD1 won, because she is the fastest reader. She couldn't put it down and finished it within a couple of days. DD2 is now reading it.
I'll be back with a review from the DDs when they get back from school.
