Private Room at Queen Charlotte's

My wife's having her first at Queen Charlotte's on the NHS. After the delivery I'd like to pay for her to move to a private room for a couple of nights but have no idea what facilities the private rooms at QC's (in the Sir Stanley Clayton Ward) have or whether you get better care (eg a higher staff/patient ratio). Does anyone have experience of these rooms? Does anyone know what they (or other private rooms in London hospitals) cost?

I had a private room after c/s at the Whittington,I think it was about £80/night. but it was well worth it for a bit of peace (the postnatal wards are very noisy). there are no extra staff for them though, you simply have a bit more privacy and maybe a loo of your own (I shared with one other mother)

£80! That sounds like a bargain. I was expecting something like £500 - £1,000. I'm clearly clueless. Was that a private ward or a single occupancy room but on the main ward?

single occup on main ward. what you're talking about is a room on a private wing eg the Lindo at St Mary's, where you do get private care. That would run into £000s. not sure if they have that at queen charlotte's.

Oh. I'm not sure whether to be relieved or disappointed.

A room in the private ward at C&W costs £750 per night.

If you go for private care its about £10k for the fall pregnancy. Your best bet is to ring the hospital and see if they have private postnatel rooms or if you need to do the whole thing private

Ouch. But that's more what I was expecting. Thanks. By the way bundle, at the risk of hijaking my own thread I saw you question about books similar to Charlottes Web for DD(? - dont recall the number). Have you tried The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett? She'll love it

Thanks TLSM. I'm due a tour of the facilities but so far they havn't replied to my e-mail enquiries. No chance of paying for teh whole thing. Even DW would baulk at that.

I had a private room at QC's - just the a room off the ward for which we had to pay. I had to stay in for a few nights and the ward was so noisy. Was lovely just DS and me with the occasional flood of visitors.

ooops. Well you tell her and get the credit! DW's expecting in early 2008 so it's not urgent. I'm just trying to plan ahead

Thanks Carnoodleusfudge. If you don't mind my asking, how much did you pay? Did you have your own bathroom?
