Childbirth

Signs of "impending" labour - surely not?

I'm 29 weeks and I just described to a friend (who has three children) that my baby has been active, literally all day today. No let up at all. Really hurting me with the movements and I have a dragging sensation at the top of my uterus which I described as "feeling a bit like the baby was pulling on the cord, though I realise it's highly unlikely to actually be that." Also getting really strong Braxton Hicks (I think) - bump harding on an off.

She's usually a really chilled out person and has just told me in no uncertain terms that I need to go home and rest and stay near a phone, that a baby moving much more than normal coupled with strong practice contractions/ braxton-hicks often precedes labour.

Is that right? Anyone? Should I be cancelling this evening's meetings and going home to put my feet up??

I feel fine - apart from feeling a bit "icky" with all the movement and unable to eat - which is somewhat odd for me.

I would go home and rest as your friends says. If you are really concerned why not call your midwife??

Hiya! I don't know about impending childbirth, but if you're feeling rotten, I'd cancel your evening's arrangements, go home and chill out anyway. I thought the baby was meant to go quiet before labour, but I'm sure someone better informed will be along soon...

Urm call your midwife or go to drs/labour ward for a check if you are concerned and rest too.

If you are at all concerned get checked out - a premature labour can be painless.

If I were you I'd go home, put your feet up and if you're still getting regular BH's call your midwife/delvery suite - it doesn't take long for them to examine you and check the baby out. Better to get checked and it be a false alarm than no checking and a sudden premature delivery at home IMO. Hope it's a false alarm

I think I'm trying to put my friend's mind at ease more than mine!

Am curious as to why a baby might go ballistic for hours on end, but don't really believe I could be about to go into labour...

Never thought of calling the midwife. Seemed a bit silly. I suppose she's probably used to it.

Took your advice and rang the midwife who says to go to hosp if the BH are regular - just in case. Said it might just be dehydration if they're irregular, so to drink a litre of water and see if it improves.

Feel slightly silly sitting at my desk with the stopwatch on my phone on the go...

She did say to go home. Am supposed to be interviewing someone shortly for my maternity cover - which suddenly seems more important than before! Will do that and get off home to have DH run after me for the evening.

Thanks ladies.

Hope that it is a false labour, but better safe than sorry and all that!

Hope so too! They're coming every seven or eight minutes for the last hour. Am willing them to go away!

I have seen SO many threads on here about "am I in labour" and the person is not, that you can't help thinking, "This really is probably NOT it."

Saw your other post, TYG - so glad to hear that it was a false alarm. Maybe you're overdoing it at work, especially considering the long hours you've been doing recently? You make sure you get some rest now - midwife and mumsnet orders!!

Well I've been preceding labour for 11 wks then
I have top gymnast inside he is a really active baby and have been getting mighty Braxton Hicks from 27 wks. AS many as 11 in one hour...

Is there anywhere you can lie down, that usually disrupts the regularity of BH's I find

Ps Am 38 wks now and still no baby....

Thanks Piffle. Midwife suggested a hospital check. THey stopped as soon as I lay on the bed. Doh.

Will know next time to just go and lie down.

Good luck with the next couple of weeks.
