posterior position?babys head engaged

I had a check with midwife 2day and she examined me on monitor, showing babys heartbeat is fine& that im having strong contractions - I knew i wasnt mad,and theyre a lot worse at nite(am 38 wks)but not strong enuf2do anything yet as my cervix is not in any way ready(she gave me an internal)...she explained to me that she suspects the agony Im in with backache etc is due to the baby being in the posterior(back to back)position. While this would explain a lot my consultant and midwife I saw a couple weeks back said they could feel the baby's back (the babys head engaged at 33wks)and I was sure thats how he's lying...I dont feel feet or fists...I feel sum huge rump under my chest which I thought was the babies bum, sumtimes feels like heels but definitely doesnt feel like hands or feet, everything Ive read about foetal positioning suggests he's in the anterior position...sometimes it feels like hes slightly more on my left side, like a bit sidewise but hes always poking out and moving nonstop..I really didnt think he was in the posterior position. Is it possible the midwife is wrong or could he have changed positions and thats why so much more pain now? I thought it was harder for the babys head to engage if in that position!? If shes right then is that not a bit worrying that his heads been down facing the wrong way for so long or worse that he twisted himself round? The midwife told me to take lots of painkillers and not to expect the pain to go away until hes born! I know this can mean a harder longer labor too...im a bit freaked now cos I know my mother had an emergency c-section with me as my head was stuck the wrong way and I was in distress. All this time Ive been delighted that everythings going to plan, I sleep on my side, never put my feet up, am active, dont slouch and dont even have a "waddle" as hubby says...so a bit disappointed and worried for poor baby to think hes stuck the wrong way, any advice???

don;t think of it as the wrong way

around 1 in 10 babies are OP......don;t get it into your head that it is wrong.!!

your midwife could have offered you a bit more reassurance

try to avoid lying on your back when labouring and have a look at this site spinning babies

my OP baby was partially engaged at 34 weeks, turned in labour, and was born 3 1/4 hours later with no intervention and no tearing !

Thanks Lulumama, dats good to hear! I just dont know what 2 expect cos my first baby, eventhough I read so much about every possibility I think its almost a bad thing cos I worry and think of every scenario! By partially engaged how much do u mean? The consultant put down 2/5 left but that was weaks ago,no1s really checked properly since or maybe its just the same...is that partially engaged or considered properly engaged!? I HATE lying on my back now even for a sec so have planned already to try have baby sitting up(my mum keeps pushin me for epidural but id rather wait and see cos i dont wana b chained to the bed in agony not helping baby along)The midwife was such a cow, was like "do u expect me 2 induce u or something" i was like no, just make sure everythings okay, lol. Thanks for ur advice, ur always around when a question needs to be answered, lol. How many babies do u have by d way and which one was OP? Ur expecting again arent u? How far? I think if i didnt have this site to keep me occupied id go mad! My mums coming on sat cos dh taking so much time off work but cnt always b here, i just wana b minded lol

hanifah-i posted on here about the same thing a few weeks ago as my baby was LOP and partailly engaged at 34 weeks, but i followed alot of the advice on that site lulumama linked to and my baby had turned by 36 weeks.

my first baby was LOP but nobody told me anything about it,and he was still OP when i gave birth...but i gave birth strapped to a monitor and they wouldnt let me change position, and giving birth flat on your back is the worst position IME.i beleive thats why he didnt turn in labour.

why dont you come and join in moaning about being large and fed up with the rest of us on the march ante-natal thread?you and i must be due around the same time as i'm 38 weeks tomorrow.

Hi Hanifah

i have 2, the second being OP..not expecting another one !!

it sounds like you have a really good idea of what you want, and i think you sound strong and positive......yo do what you need to do, not what your mum thinks

i ended up delivering sat up ......it was fine, 30 mins of pushing..

Hi Diva...how you doing ?

mine was 3/5 engaged at 34 weeks

have to say, in all honesty, the worst bit of labour was when she turned ! after that it was all good !

easy in hindsight ! x

thanks lulumama,am gona try gas and air alone and plenty of on all fours, wud like to deliver squatting but realistically ive seen the uncomfortable labor ward so prob more practical sitting up. I have my birth plan made out now for long time, hope the mw's dont think im being snotty, its pretty detailed

my EDD is march 14th but i'm booked in for induction on march 7th(a week tomorrow-)due to previous problems with high bp.

GOOD NEWS!no havnt had the baby but went midwife today and she cud feel babys bum and back etc and said hes def anterior as far as she can tell, hes now 4/5ths engaged nsteada 3/5ths so mayb pain was him pushin more!?!anyway im feelin a lot better altho i stil want him out ASAP lol, everyone says how huge i am and midwife said it feels like all baby(not fluid etc)so she thinks he'll be a whopper. Im 38+5 she said if i go 40+5 shel give me a sweep and 42wks theyl induce me...so dont know if it was the tips that turned the baby back round r if she was wrong and hes been anterior all along(which i thought)
