I have been told today that my wound is infected and I need to stop breastfeeding so I can take antibiotics. I really dont want to do this and am hoping for some alternatives. Please help if you can.

Is there not a different type of antibiotics you can be given and still safley bf?
If not i guess dr's know what they are talking about and are doing what they need to, to keep you healthy, you don't want to leave it untreated trust me i had a surgery wound that got infected and i left it the result wasn't nice or pretty.

Talk to you health care provider and tell them your feelings see if they have any safe alternatives.

Poor you about the infection though! [ouch] hope your better soon.

I took antib's for mastitis when i was feeding dd. I wouldn't like to say different to a doctor but hopefully mears will be around later.

When i was feeding they wouldn't treat an ingrowing toenail but followingh advice from here I demanded they relooked at it and there was no proble. A lot of times they're being over cautious.

LA Leche League or the association of breastfeeding mothers have properly qualified peeps to give you proper advice

Thanks, I am in Spain and they dont seem to be too bothered about breastfeeding here. I just want to check that this is the only way before I stop.

Hope that gives you hope of continuing. I'm sure if mears or tiktok are around later they would have more advice.

This may help. I breastfed when my scar was infected and my dd was fine. The link below gives a comprehensive list of what is fine. The standard drugs for infected scars in the UK are Co-amoxiclav and Metronidazole

This happened to me four weeks ago, had uterine infection in c/s wound. Took co-amoxyclav for 5 days. I continued breastfeeding okay, although my DDs poos went a bit runny. Didn't seem to bother her though - and I felt like a new woman within about 2 tablets!

to help heal your wound - try using drops of tea tree oil in warm water to put on a cloth and dab your wound - don't pull the cloth along the stitches iyswim then dry with paper towels by holding the towels again against your stitches to dry them. Helps it heal nicely.

Ditto what the others said about the anitbiotics....

I took Augmentin while bf ds1, after my wound was infected. No problem in Ireland where our bf rate is pathetic so can't imagine it's a problem in Spain!

I took Augmentin when bfing ds1 and am now on bactrim while bfing ds2. I think too many dr's take the easy - for them! - route and say don't bf while taking. Try to stand firm on taking an AB that is compatible wuth bfing, It can be done!

Just a quick update, went to a more informed dr and have been happily breastfeeding and taking antibiotics for the last week. I can´t believe that in this day and age, a dr could be so ill informed. Anyway the infection is clearing up but I might have to go and have surgery soon as the hole is big. Anyway thanks for your help.
