Car seats

Maclaren and travel system worry.

I recently purchased a Recaro Profi Plus car seat for our future daughter. The reason for this choice is that it marries up with the Maclaren Techno XLR which, after lengthy research will be our buggy of choice.

I contacted Maclaren to purchase the relevant clips required to marry the two together and was shocked by their reply. They said that they no longer mate baby seats to their systems and have discontinued their travel system (XLR with Recaro seat).

They are seemingly concerned with the health of the baby, saying that travel systems that utilise the car baby seat, only encourage exceeding the recommended time spent in a car seat position.

On average a car journey lasts 1 hour, a shopping trip 3 hours and then return 1 hour this is a total of 4 hours which is twice the recommended time.

At first I thought, OK I will buy a different stroller that meets my demands but then had second thoughts, Maclaren is a business and would not take a decision like this lightly there must be more to this than meets the eye. I do commend them for this stance and just for that, will still buy their stroller.

I'm interested to hear anyone's thoughts on this, and don't you think it is worrying when a manufacturer excludes themselves from a huge market share of the travel system.

Tbh I wish more manufacturers would do this. A lot just make the clips for their carrycot the same as carseat adapters though. Too many people leave babies in carseats for long periods of time.

It wouldn't make me buy a Maclaren though.

You can buy a carrycot for the Techno XLR, I too think that 'travel systems' are a bad idea and have never had one! How hard is it to pick a baby up out of a car seat and put it in a pram?

And besides, the car seat you buy should be the one that fits best in your car - you shouldn't just choose one because it conveniently fits on your pram.

I have the Recaro car seat and XLR and carrycot. If I remember right, the adaptors were in the box with the carseat (mind this was two years ago).

I know the risks of leaving babies in their car seats and know for certain dd never sat in her seat for longer than the two hours advised, amd when she was small, she was in the carrycot.

Are you sure the adaptors arent in the bottom.of the carseat box?
