Keep having notions of camping with DH and 2 kids (nearly four and just one) - would I be mad to go whilst they are so young. Where would you recommend for a good first time camp and how far in advance do you have to book for really good campsites in the summer? Had a look at polzeath the other day which looked beautiful. It all seems so daunting as I have never camped before and wonder if I will survivie without luxuries and a hair dryer!!!

I would go for it! try and borrow stuff for your first time and go for a site that has good reviews (and fabulous toilet blocks!)

btw I take my straighteners and hair dryer - what more luxury do you want?

We looked at tents today! We have decided to invest in a good one and all the gear instead of a holiday abroad this year with the intetion being that we get several holidays a year in the future. Very very excited!

Camping is great. The children will love it. My advice would be to get the comfiest thing you can to sleep on. Putting a duvet on top of whatever matress you have to sleep on makes it much cosier and comfier, if you have space in the car!

We tend to go for smaller campsites with fewer facilities as they are generally prettier/quieter but it depends on what you're after. The bigger ones have activities etc for the children if that's what you want.

Have fun.

You could look out for something like this deal on ebay

Lucycat....you take hair straighteners, next you'll be telling us you have an EHU and a fridge and microwave and heater and TV and satellite dish, then it's just an inevitable slippery slope towards

caravans

becks, I'd go for it. DH and I are going for project 'happy camper' in 2008, I already have my first camp booked....v v excited.
Lots of lovely campers here with experience ++ who will let you know what you need (or don't...hair straighteners ...sheesh)

I echo EEC with regards to sleeping on the best your budget will stretch to. Being cold and uncomfortable at night will lead to campers crack up (and a reduction in tent nookie).

tent nookie but people would hear you surely!!!

You have to be very quiet, and substitute exclamations of primeval joy for something like

"Don't touch the sides"

or

"is there any loo roll left"

that sort of thing

Just the ehu - to keep the wine milk cold.

no TV or any of that crap, but we did visit the Caravan show last year at GMEX and marveled at some of the tin tents - it did sway me for ooh about an hour until mn helped me see the true light.

LC, glad you came round. Of course give us all 20 years (if we're still on MN) and we'll be looking at caravan porn and talking about awnings.

I love the term on ukcs 'shed draggers'

oh I doubt it - dh won't even entertain the idea of pulling a trailer as he can't 'go fast'.

I ask you we have a Norfolk Lake and he won't have a trailer......it takes up more than half the car!

Slubberdegullion · 25/03/2008 19:10

Oh I'm sure you can get some really diddy trailers (perfect for lovely big tent) and could still drive quite fast, and then you could fill your boot up with all other kinds of shite necessary equipment.
