Camping

Tell me how easy / difficult it is to go camping in France.

We've done plenty of camping in the UK, in National parks, and have done a couple of package canvas holiday type things in Europe, where it's all arranged for you.

Holiday budget for this year is tiny, but we would still like to go abroad, so are thinking of taking the tents to France, but for some reason this is filling me with apprehension. Can anyone help?

How essential is it to advance book the campsite/s?

How far in advance should this be done?

What, generally, do you expect to pay to take a car and a family of five across the channel?

Can anyone recommend any campsites not too vastly far from ferryport - don't want to drive right the way across France if possible. We would be sailing from the south, could go to calais or Cherbourg, or, umm, don't know what other ones there are...I'm rubbish at this, aren't I?

Help.

have a look at www.select-site.com. They break down campsites into regions - you can book with them or get the name of a campsite and then find its website. I'd say you have to book early - when I tried to book a site a few years ago, it was booked up for the weeks we wanted by Feb. I dont know if its essential to pre-book but I was too scared to travel halfway across france and not find anything!!! Good luck!

Dead easy to do

Essential if you are going in the summer holidays and you want to goto a particular site

Early if it is a big popluar site, later if it is a municipal site with less facilities

Depends on how you want to do it! (soory to be vague)

Don't know where you are, but you can get great deals on Eurotunel - last year (booked in March) it cost us about £85, car plus 2 adults, 1 child.
Wouls say definately pre-book, lots of easy to use web sites.
I have to say I think French campsites are generally very good, and I have never had a bad experience. Also Normandy and Brittany very nice, also area around Riems which is not too far from Calais.
