I HATE CAMPING ITS THE WORST THING EVER !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Just returned from 4 nights camping in Nodes Point in Isle Of Wight.
Now dont get me wrong, the IOW is glorious and we had amazing weather and yeah the view from the field was nice but ....... OMG what a stinking dump and why would I spend any holiday doing this.

  1. Cleaning my teeth whilst someone unrelated takes a dump behind me.
  2. Stinking toilets and showers, with 'things' wiped on the wall that were there 2 days running.
  3. Bins overflowing for days on end.
  4. Having nowhere to hand up my clothes
  5. Sharing a shower with 100 other people, I mean I dont share my showe at home with all my neighbours, why do it on holiday.
  6. People who drive old Rovers and think that playing music til all hours is what everyone wants (Eagles/T-Rex anyone?)
  7. Walking across a field to wash my dishes, er no thanks I have a sink and dishwasher in the next room at home.

I could go ono but I wont

Needless to say I wont be camping again anytime soon and dh has not persuaded me to go to France camping for our main holiday next year

Noooo!
Camping is not the worst thing ever....that campsite is...
Sorry you had such a bad time mosschops.

Sorry you had such a rotten camping time of it.

I love it though.

The whole smell of the tent, the sound of the zips. The trips to loos in wellies with torch and loo roll. The making hot chocolate on a little 1-ring stove. The bbq in the evening. I love the washing up in a little bowl. It's so different from usual day-to-day life, I love it.

sorry, but rofl at 'nowhere to hang up my clothes'!

I love it too, it is much much better in less busy times/places

You should put a review of the site on UK Campsite - it might make the site owners sit up and take notice. Name and shame the site on here too.

I'm sorry you had such a rotten time - our first ever camping trip was ruined by a noisy gathering of people who totally ignored the quiet after 11pm rule and carried on partying, loudly til 3 am when I shouted at them.

We've had better trips since - it really does depend on the site and your fellow campers though.

That does sound like an awful experience.

Self-catering cottage or gite next time?

God I love camping.

But not on August Bank holiday weekend.

We went last week, and left on Saturday. Much better.

sorry you had a bad time mosschops.

I wouldn't rule out France though, totally different over there so I hear?
I've only camped once as a teenager but want to do it again with my sons. It'll be next year now though as don't have equipment.

Unless I had my own shower/toilet/sink/wardrobe it aint going to get better.

I was just so shocked at the behaviour of other children as well, it was like a mass gathering of families from hell ....

Yes. You don't really sound like a camper .

We also drive an old Rover BTW....

Campervan?

LucyJones · 29/08/2007 09:58

did you really think you'd have your own bathrobe and wardrobe? did you do any research?!!

Report
Kathyis6incheshigh · 29/08/2007 10:00

You could have your own toilet if you want, but it will be made of plastic and you'll have to empty it from time to time

Report
mosschops30 · 29/08/2007 10:02

No LucyJones I didnt! What I did expect was some cleanliness to make up for the distinct lack of home comforts ans there was nothing clean about this place.

I have stayed in a little campsite in Wales with friends before and it knocked spots off this place

Shower-you can buy 'solar showers' (aka plastic sack with a tap on that can hang on a hook/tree and be 'warmed' by the sun)

Wardrobe - you are allowed to be creased while living in a tent. Maybe bean stands to allow you to store your clothes folded but out of bag. Or one of those hanging devices.

Washing up - boil water in kettle, use washing up bowl in camping table.

Things go beserk over August Bank holiday IME. We went to Eweleaze in Dorset a couple of years ago and it was revolting, whereas at all other times it is one of the nicest sites we've been to.

Sorry you had a bad time. We went to that site at Easter in a mobile home, so didn't experience the communal facilities, and also it was obviously quieter.
I'm like you, whilst i like camping i like my mod cons too, so a caravan is a good compromise. Would recommend the French campsites, definately nicer. Try eurocamp or similar (one company has a mobile with a dishwasher)

I can see where youre all coming from but I'm sorry I just dont get it. Yeah its fine for a night or two with friends but there is no way I would give up my 'normal' holiday to live like that. I cant understand the logic behind living well all year and then for the 2 weeks youre on holiday living like that???

Sorry just dont get it, its not clean, or fun!

It is cheap - that's a pretty big part of the logic for us...

well I manage to hang my clothes up, and I sympathise with the bogging conditions and irritating campers...

wild camping? you take your own solar shower and camp miles from everyone, get dh to do the dishes/ or children too? and well if you are not a camper then don't do it, but yes I think france camping would be different even if you have to share a loo/shower... do you ever use public toilets day to day, everyone has to take a dump... but you could brush your teeth in the great outdoors with a lovely view

I have heard distant drums telling me of continental campsites where you can rent pitches with their own toilet/shower.

When I camped round Oz, and last year doing Eurocamp I had to enter a new mind state that was 'I am not going to keep up with my usual habits of cleanliness/tidyness/general appearance'.

I had to accept that I was going to be a wee bit scummy, my clothes would be mismatched, creased and would probably have more food on them than I would usually tolerate, and that I would have to poo on a loo that a stranger had warmed for me.

Once you get past the initial 'eww' factor, it suddenly becomes quite liberating. I'm anally tidy at home (and I know I would be if I was in a cottage/gite etc), but being in a tent, cleaning your teeth in the open air is quite therapeutic.

That said a fithly disgusting campsite is intolerable and you should def. name & shame them on UKcampsite (I cannot abide revolting washrooms).

I agree with you Mosschops. Camping is not my idea of a holiday at all!

Am suprised to see that the reports on that website are very good!
Either I am not very tolerant and obviously aiming far too high for a campsite or people who go camping are quite happy to live like shite for a while??
