UK campsites within walking distance of a good family beach.

We have a camper van and so for our main holiday it is handy if we can walk to the beach rather that having to pack everything up to drive there.
We have four children from 3 - 12 so the walk can't be too long and the beach needs to be suitable for children.

Last year we stayed at Gwithian Farm fairly near St Ives in Cornwall and I completely recommend it. It's in a perfect location for our needs, the site is really well run, no entertainment or bar etc but the chip van comes twice a week and a bakery van in the mornings. The only negative thing I can think of is the site is a bit windy.

We would very happily go there again but I like the idea of visiting some other places too.

I know that it's early but I also know the good places book up very quickly.

There's a campsite next to Wells by the Sea in Norfolk-not a particularly attractive site, but the beach is pretty glorious (have stayed there all day many times)-can't remember the name, but it's the only one directly behind the beach.

Campsite is nothing special amenities wise - toilets, showerblock, but all I really need, and you can't get much closer to the beach than that.

Magic cove in porth Morgan in Cornwall. Not a fancy site but amazing beach, just next to local bus stop, walking distance of cafe, shop &pub. Want to go back but it's a long drive from north east.

We stay at Crossroads Farm in Cubert, Cornwall and recommend it to anyone who asks. Very simple site but no need for any extras as Cubert village is a five minute walk away with shop, chippy & pub/restaurants and the beach at Holywell Bay a 15 minute walk down the hill (although coming home again up hill is a teeny bit tiring there are another couple of good pubs on the way up!). There's also Holywell Bay Fun Park about half way down the hill which is fab for the kids too.

Thank you, I'll look at all those. I wasn't expecting replies straight away, I'm glad it's not just me on the camping thread in December.
I don't know if it's clear from the op but the lack of "entertainment" is a good thing. I do however need ehu if we're going for a week or two.

There are several nice ones in Morfa Bychan, Wales. Down near black rock sands beach.

If you can take the drive to Scotland this is a lovely new-ish site that we stayed at last year. Stunning beach 2 minutes away.

Pentewen Sands is on the beach but it has entertainment.

I also noticed a couple of campsites near to the beach in Polzeath. Not sure what they are called though.

These sound great! Now, where's a good place to buy a camper van?

The campsite that DefineMe mentions at Wells on the N Norfolk coast is called Pinewoods. And Wells is indeed a most fabulous beach, with gorgeous woods and walks behind. There is a little train or a walk on to Wells Quay and into the town, or beach and walks, and you can also hire the famous Wells Beach huts by the week or day from the campsite.

I second Pentewan Sands we had a lovely (but wet!) holiday there this year.

Beach is large and safe and the pool was great too.

Nicholaston Farm in the Gower is where I go every year. A great family campsite a two minute walk to the beach through the woods and dunes. Also in the summer you can go strawberry picking and there is a small cafe as well.

I kept this thread bookmarked as we have a Motorhome and like to walk or cycle to beach/pubs/towns. Thanks everyone for their recommendations - I definately want to try a few of these - especially Nicholaston Farm and some of the cornwall sites.

We have just booked to go to Golden Cap, after almost booking it's sister park Highlands end as both right on the Dorset coast, but we will save Highlands end for the summer. Golden cap has no club facilities etc - just a visiting fish and chip van and a pub, and only 100m from the coast.

Hope it warms up soom.

Any more recommendations out there?

There is a campsite in Charmouth, Dorset, which is right on the beach. All pitches have EHU and the shower block is the cleanest I've seen.

Report
2006hildy · 12/04/2013 16:57

What is EHU?

If they are booked up already does that mean they are more expensive than average prices?

Has anybody got any more Dorset coast recommendations?

I like this thread

EHU is Electric Hookup and yes they are slightly more expensive normally £3 a night ISP for electricity but sometimes well worthwhile.

I was told last year that magic cove has a waiting list for summer holiday weeks and they take regulars before newbies, though not sure that is correct. We tried and failed last year.

If you look up magic cove on UK campsite there is another site right next door. Can't remember the name and just off out now so can't look it up sorry! Friends of ours camp there every year and say its great. Very basic but clean.
