Camping

Lone Woman Camping...

I know this topic is quiet at this time of year

My children no longer want to camp with me, I love camping and usually go camping at least 4 times a year for up to 5 days at a time.

My question is this: is it weird to go camping alone?

I like my own company, and would take safety precautions, but don't want to be limited to going camping with friends.

We've met lots of lone women campers on our trips. I'm always very envious of their solitude and freedom. They sit and read a book, drinking nice cups of tea whilst I run after dcs and hand wash wee-d on sleeping bags!
So long as you dont camp wild, you should be as safe as anyone else.

God, I'd love to go on my ownEnvy

I wouldn't think anyone else doing it alone odd!

I did it alone with the dses and felt very safe. If I could have left them behind to, I would have been in heaven.

Nice long walk in the day time, come back and cook what I want for supper, sip wine and read in peace.....

You can borrow my dses if you like, then I can go aloneWink

Add me to the list of envious MNetters.

I'm sitting wistfully dreaming of a few days in the caravan - just me, a cooked breakfast, a long riverbank or canal walk followed by some uninterrupted reading and wine. Repeat for 2 or 3 days to recharge my batteries.

Maybe in the spring Smile

I'm too scared to go on my own, even with the children. We've done it on a secure campsite, with friends/family nearby, but I like to have a bit of adult company in case things go wrong, which they did with us - ds managed to injure his foot on someone's dodgy tentpeg and we ended up driving round the town after hours trying to find the invisible hospital.

Much less fun without people to help.

But saying that I think it is a lovely idea, and if you're not afraid, then go for it.

I like camping alone. I've always felt safe.

I have taken DS camping on my own, and it was fab and absolutley fine. If we had an emergency I would ask someone for help (I've always chatted to SOMEONE and I know I would always help anyone else - camping is like that) or call an ambulance.

This summer I went camping completely alone and absolutely loved it...oops, more later - Homeland!

I think it's a great idea. I have done it quite often. With and without dogs!
If you enjoy your own company and you're sensible i don't see why you shouldn't.

I don't think it's weird to go camping alone at all, in fact it enhances one of the benefits of camping - enjoying freedom, silence, the outdoors, complete peace and relaxation and no demands except your own. I went to a woodland site that allows fires, I wouldn't go to a busy holiday camp style site on my own - that would sort of defeat the purpose, for me.

It was so simple making my own breakfast and headng off for long upland walks, the whole catering business was just so much easier.

I love camping in groups, too, for a different experience, kids having adventures, laughing round the fire with wine etc.

Thanks for all the replies.

I take the point of not going for a busy campsite. I just want to fully charge my kindle, take all the food and drink that I like and get outside in the countryside.

I love it when it rains and I am all snuggly in my tent.

Bliss, and now without the kids complaining.

Sounds lovely.
We're all dead jealous.

In an 'outdoorsy' campsite near hillwalking and mountains you'll find lots of people camping alone. Nobody would think it weird.

Might be a bit odd if you pitch a 1man tent in a big family place full of giant 6-sleeper tents and loud rowdy families.

Not weird at all. Sounds like heaven! I've been on my own with the boys. Hadn't thought of going completely on my own but sitting in the sun, dinner on the Cobb, with gininatin and my kindle... Sounds like heaven!

I've been on my own with my kids. I've never even thought about safety! I'm also considering going on my own when they are at their dad's. Peace and fresh air!
