Calorie-counting

how do I count calories..

with things like home made soup/casserole etc? For example last night I cooked turkey breast (easy to enter into MFP) with some brown rice (again weighed it out and easily entered into MFP) but the sauce was made up of chopped tomatoes, red pepper, kidney beans, sweetcorn, pancetta, mushrooms, courgettes, all sautéed in extra virgin olive oil.

How can I accurately count the calories? Is it a case of having to weigh out each thing? E.g weigh out the beans, corn etc? If so that's such a faff! Also salads I always find to be tricky.

Join myfitnesspal.com. It's free and awesome. There is a smartphone app and you can log all the food you eat. It already knows the calorie values of most common foods. It can help you choose a good calorie limit for you too.

With homemade stuff I weigh everything out once then make a 'recipe' on MFP rounding up the amounts. Then every now and again I'll weigh things out again so I know my portion sizes aren't creeping up!

Ooh MrsG you are more organised than me! It is working though. Slowly and I have to put in the exercise. And not drink the wine. If you are looking for more MFP friends you can add me. I'm Pixiemops on there too.

It sounds very organised but I'm currently not even logging! Breast feeding makes me so hungry and I have no motivation!

A lot of the time with stuff pike that I iust guess.
eg I pick a salad thT looks like what im having.
for your sauce id search for tomato and vegetable pasta sauce and just pick the closest looking. Sometimes youll be over sometimes under. I find its the logging that is crucial not the detail. Youll know if youve put loads of extta olive oil in or whatever. Just dont lie to yourself as I am currently doing!!

I do the same SPB. Find something similar and if in doubt maybe overestimate by picking the higher amount.

Its definitely the act of logging that helps me. Do I really need this snack to add over 100 calories? Grin Or am I just bored/comfort eating?

We eat different stuff all the time, so I can't be bothered with the faff of logging recipes nearly every day.
