I need to lose about 2 stone. I have joined the gym at my workplace and am watching what I eat, I am experimenting with my fitness pal at the moment. It gives me 1500 calories a day. The thing is that DH has a very sweet tooth and the house is always full of cakes, biscuits, chocolates etc. and today him and the DS's had a pizza takeaway for tea. I tried going in the other room but the smell came wafting through and I could have killed for a slice! I really don't want to be joyless or controlling about food as this is my choice not theirs (DH says I don't need to lose weight but at 5'4 and 11 st 12 I disagree) but it is so hard not to cave in and binge on all the lovely goodies a few feet away. It's not helping that I feel hungry most of the time on a reduced intake, especially in the evening and I wake up feeling starved in the night. Has anyone managed to really stick to a weight loss regime and avoid temptation? How do you stave off the hunger pangs?

Omg I am so with you on this one!
My dh is skinny as a stick but eats like a horse. He will easily consume 2000 calories every evening. He eats from 8pm when he gets in until bedtime. Typical evening is massive plate of dinner, 2 oranges, 2 packets of crisps, toast and humous, cheese and biscuits, hero chocolates. It is torture!!
I am on Mfp (which is amazing btw)
I have a strict rule that once dinner is finished (I eat at about 6pm with the kids) I am not allowed to eat anything else, nothing at all.

If you are on 1500 cals on Mfp there is no reason you couldn't have a slice of pizza for dinner with some salad with low fat dressing. You just need to pre think it and plan it into your days cals. I know that this evening we are going out for dinner, so I will have less to eat all day and save my calories for this evening. I still have to make a sensible choice and watch my portion but it means I won't totally blow it!!

As for the hunger it will gradually ease. I am on week 4 now ( almost 1stone down) I would say on the whole I am not hungry now. I have odd moments, especially in the evenings. But nothing like in the beginning.

Stick with it :)
There are quite a few mumsnetters on Mfp if you put your username I will add you.

Have a coping plan for when this is going to happen. If you know in advance they are going to order a pizza then get yourself one of those low calorie ones from tesco. Same for other kinds of takeaway - get yourself a low calorie version. keep a supply of dark chocolate and low-cal hot chocolate in the house so if you are tempted by something sweet you can have a hot choc and a few squares of dark choc to satisfy you. Hunger pangs will go away if you stick at it - and maybe save 100 calories or so to have a snack just before you go to bed.

Hey, was just having a mooch through here and saw your post. Thought I would share as I started MFP a year ago and have lost 25lbs. So a similar amount to what you wish to lose. It was more than 30 at my lightest, but I went a bit far and have gained a few pounds for the good.

At first I found it really hard, but I also found that I lost way more than the amount it suggested I would lose at a set calorie amount, so I would set it to lose 1 or even half a pound per week and usually lose easily double that. I think you are eating quite a low amount at 1500 and it might be hard to sustain. Your body can go into starvation mode and just not lose if you are eating too few calories, which I'm sure you know.

As for the hunger pangs etc, I remember that well. Ugh. Firstly I drank TONS of water, that helped a bit. Eggs were a godsend as like all proteins, they help you feel full, but unlike many they are quick to cook, low calorie and cheap to boot. I ate mountains of all kinds of veg to feel full and saved a few (maybe 100) kcals for the end of each day to have a small treat with a cup of tea as that was my little ritual (and still is). Glorious Skinny Soups also amazing and genuinely delicious for few calories. Find when you like to have your little treat and savour it. Lots of things nearly has said above really and it is true, the pangs do go away believe it or not and you really do get used smaller portions of all the usual things your family will be eating and be fine with it.

I had tried aaaaalll kinds of diets in my time without any real success or progress and this is the only thing that has really worked for me as you make your choices from regular food. Consider upping your calories a tad and stick it for the long haul. Be brutally honest every day in your log especially on days when you've gone over, it happens; and weigh stuff, don't guess until you really get portion size under control.

Hope I havent bored you to tears! Wishing you lots of luck and success.

Hi OP. I had the same problem with DP and DD.

I do the weekly shop online, so I make sure there isn't much sweet stuff in the house. I've told them that if they want a treat then they can walk to the shops and get one while I'm at work.

With dinners... I try and have some of what they have but switch it up a bit. Last night they had mimce pasta bake with cheese on top. I had 2 spoonfuls of the mince and mixed it up with some new potatoes and mixed veg.

It was really nice and I didn't feel like I was missing out.
