Infant feeding

any tips for losing weight sensibly whilst BF?

I got down to within half a stone of my pre-pregnancy weight within 10 weeks, just by BF - normal diet and plenty of it to make sure good milk. Now I've stopped there and DS is 5 months. I'd planned on stopping BF at 6mo, so didn't worry about the weight, just figured I'd sort it then, but now feeding is going so well and we're both enjoying it, don't want to stop the BF. So now I don't know what's a sensible way to lose the remainder of the weight, without risking my milk supply going down? (also, any tips on good foods to bump up milk?) TIA.

I tried following the WeightWatchers programme (only went for a few weeks as not easy to get there with dd and don't like paying to be weighed) - they have a points system with extra points depending on whether exclusively or partially bf. It does seem to work and is a helpful guide to quantities etc.

I'm still bf dd at 8mths and am trying to eat lots of low fat dairy for calcium and protein (am veggie), lots of wholegrain stuff, beans and pulses, fill up on fruit and veg etc. If you aim not to lose more than 1 lb per week I wouldn't have thought your supply would be affected as it should be very well established.

Just carry on breastfeeding and you'll lose the weight. After breastfeeding for 9 months I weighed 4kg less than before conception, and after breastfeeding for a year I weighed 7kg less. And I ate lots (healthy diet though).

when they breast feed some women keeps some fat stores in reserve, which go as soon as you stop or child no longer uses you as main source of food (around 10 months or so). guess you could be one of those. Wait until ds is properly on solids and my guess is that last half source will disolve away as if by magic without you having to diet

I have found than another half stone started dropping off after about 9 months (no dieting, lots of cake ). I had lost quite a bit by 5 months, then plateaued, now am losing a bit again. Still bfing as well. I'd stick to what you're doing and see what happens.

thanks everybody. i did wonder if it might just be there until i stop feeding now. I do try and eat sensibly, but having fully embraced domesticated goddess-hood, hubby has bought me a couple of nigella books and i have to admit to a choc brownie habit once in a while!!!

Mine dropped off in stages without even trying and still eating everything in sight. I noticed a fair drop after he stopped night feeds, then a bit more once he was on solids, a bit more when I started childminding (therefore cutting down the frequency of daytimes feeds) and now I'm 4kgs lighter than pre preg. I put on 19kgs, so I had a fair bit to lose. You will also probably lose some when your ds starts crawling around as you will be forever running after him to stop him getting in a pickle I would second the carrying on feeding too and well done for getting this far.

Oh and BTW, what you eat and drink won't affect your ability to make milk or the quality of it.

Agree that the weightloss seems to go in stages, lost just over a stone in the first few weeks then nothing for absolutley ages, in fact between months 3-8 I probably put some on. DS is nearly 10 mo now and still fully bf, I now weigh less than I did pre-pg- I lost half a stone in a week once he was 9.5mo without doing anything differently
