Infant feeding

HVs assuming bottle fed

I was at my baby clinic yesterday to get DS weighed. They have us in in twos, weigh both babies and then ask both mums if there are any problems, etc.
They weighed the babies and then the other mum there said to the HV that her ds is a bit colicky, what would she recommend, had tried infacol etc.
HV first response was 'what teat are you using'. Mum responded that she was breastfeeding.
I was just surprised that the automatic assumption was that the baby was being bottle fed, aged 8 weeks. Should I have been surprised, or is this normal response from HVs? Interested to hear others' experiences.

Agree, it is a bit weird, but bottle fed babies tend to be more colicky than breast fed, so that may be why.

Some HVs don't believe that breast-fed babies can suffer with colic. They're wrong, of course, but it might explain her automatic assumption that the baby was bottle-fed.

Maybe that's it. During my pregnancy every health professional I encountered was heavy on the 'breast is best' etc, so it just made me do a bit of a double take.
