Didn't bf for long myself, but have friend who SWEAR by Lanilsoh ?(purple tube in Boots)

Lansinoh, its about a tenner in boots.

I have never heard the full fat by 21 days comment before.

Just go with it for now, I found co-sleeping the only way to cope.

Congrats on your New baby.

i used kamilison it was good about 5 quid in boots yellow tube
stick with it it bloody hurts and is so tiring but after 3-4 weeks its so much easier
i used to try and feed quite a bit between 6pm and 10pm then go straight to sleep as soon as 10pm feed was finished, this used to usually give me a good 3-4 hours before next feed

LANSINOH!!!!! marvellous stuff! I bought some more recently in preparation for upcoming 2nd baby. One of the few things I've manged to get organised about. My local Boots didn't have it but Waitrose did.

My midwife said Vaseline does exactly the same as the other creams, I found expressing a bit of milk and rubbing in to the nipple after each feed quite good.

Used all kinds of creams with dd1, nothing with dd2, just kept them clean and dry, used tommee tippee breastpads and if possible natural sunlight and breastmilk on nipples. Ive got scar tissue on my nipples so it was difficult for me, but even with that it did became easier.

Hi Kitten,

Well doen for persevering with the bfing - it does get easier as you go along but not sure about your HVs advice TBH! Your milk does change as your baby grows but not in the way she describes.

Usually your nipples would be getting better by now although frequent feeding can play havoc. However the most common cause of sore niples is an incorrect latch so have you had anyone check your latch in person? This could be your MW or HV (although remember taht they have not always bfed themselves or had any training) or go along to your local bfing support group. You should at least have one in the hospital and maybe in the community especially if you are near a Surestart area. The other way you can do it is to phone one of the support groups and I'm sure someone will be along with phone numbers soon!

Anyway I also recommend Lanisoh but please do get your latch checked out too. Some women feed in discomfort for months and then a slight readjustment makes all the difference.

BTW those manic night feeds won't go on forever but remember to feed frequently in the day to get her in the habit. In the meantime you may find that co-sleeping and feeding lying down are the biz.

I second Laundrylovers well done for perservering with bfing.

I didn't use nipple creams. I used a little breast milk rubbed into the nipple. It was so soothing. Even after 2-3 weeks when they were cracked and scabby and you could see the milk seeping through (yeah, enduring image!)

It all cleared up by wk 5 and everytime he was weighed I could think 'all my own work' When I stopped at 13.5 months I was so proud I got through the tough times.

It does get easier, it really does. More power to you

Creams did nothing IME. An older friend recommended a spray called Rotasept which was fantastic but I'd run out for no#3 and no-one sold it anymore. The midwives didn't tell me off for using it but they said it wasn't recommended by them anymore. But it was truly fantastic...

The pain does ease after a while. Sorry - I know that doesn't help now but it's true Good luck. You are doing the very best thing for her.

find gel pads- cream did nothing for me, not even lansinoh. if you can get mother mates gel pads on ebay u'll be lucky, otherwise chicco do some in boots.

Another recommendation for Lansinoh - it's expensive but it's pure lanolin and it's much better, IMHO, than any of the other creams. Keep going, it can be really tough at the beginning but it does get easier.

kittenbaby,

your doing a great job, just feed feed feed on demand.. and keep trying to master the art of lying down whilst feeding it is the best thing ever. I breastfed my dd1 for 25 months and i am currently breastfeeding my dd2 who is 4.5 months.

I would recommend Silverette for sore/cracked nipples. It is the only product which soothed but ALSO completely healed immediately (or within 48 hours), theres loads of thing you will get out there that with greatly sooth the nipples but will not quickly heal them.

Stick with it kitten, your giving your dd the best thing in the world. The first few weeks can be hellish but it is so worth it to hang in there.

Just wanted to echo the comment about getting your latch checked. See if there is a local bfing clinic who can watch you latch on. A couple of millimeters to the left or right should help enormously, and avoid the problem of cracked nipples for you. Your milk will also respond to the latch - once baby is fully latched on your baby will be getting the full fat (hind)milk easier and find it more satisfying.

In the meantime, I was another one who used ordinary vaseline whilst I was getting my latch right.

Well done you for getting so far. It does get so much easier too.

haven't read all the messages (sorry) but just wanted to say that I was telling another mum how great lansinoh was on another thread and someone else mentionned that you can get it on prescrption apparantly...def worth looking into cause it is pricey (but great!) but this other mnetter said she was told they would rather give it out and keep people b'feeding.....good luck anyway, sounds like you're doing a great job. I think most babies feed loads at night for the first couple of months but it really does settle down. co-sleeping and biscuit snacks and lots of water by the bed helped me....

beware of creams if you're allergic to lanolin, they made me so much worse as I didn't know about my allergy then. try some on your hands first just in case.

DITDOT · 11/07/2007 11:40

nelliloula was talking about me. Had bad cracked nipples and was given lansinoh on prescription for as long as I was BF. Saved me a fortune and worked as well.

If you are allergic to lanolin then with my 1st DD I used Jellonet available on prescription and MW and HV can precribe.

if you want some lansinoh (sp) I've got am almost complete tube which I've only used 2 or 3 times (nipple healed up really quickly and DS3's latch improved too) which you can have for p&p if you want.

kitten - good suggestions here, and I will add another one - be very sceptical of this HV and her bf knowledge! It is simply not true that milk in the early days is like 'semi-skimmed' and that it becomes full fat by day 21. If you are feeoing cheeky, ask her where she got that one from!

New babies feed often, for nutritional reasons and for comfort. Most will put in a few 'all nighters' where they really want to do nothing but doze and feed, lying alongsided mum and never really sleeping deeply for a long time.

It has zero to do with the fat content of the milk.

BTW, you haven't said you are sore. No need for nipple cream unless you are...if you are, positioning and attachment may need amending, and maybe use a product such as mentioned here.
