Infant feeding

BF baby, 4 weeks old and not back to birth weight

My son will be 4 weeks old tomorrow. He was 8lb 13.5 when he was born, at 9 days he was 8lb 4, 15 days 8lb6 and at 25 days only 8lb 9. I started a thread here asking for advice when he was a week old cos he hadnt pooed, he did soon after and was pooing loads but now hasnt done for 2or3 days although has lots of wet nappies.

He is feeding loads, no more than 2.5 hours without a feed and not even that long in the day, he rarely goes more than an hour without a feed. And he's latching on well, better than my last 2 did!

I have just spent 4 days in hospital with infected womb on antibiotics which im still taking and dont know if this could be having any effect although i had him with me without anything to do except sit around cuddling and feeding him which should have helped surely?

I dont know what else i can do, i really dont want to start giving him ff so any advice would be great

TIA

Is he being weighed naked and on the same scales?

Just wanted to check that out because that can be an issue.

It may well be that the womb infection you have had has had an impact on your milk production. Infection can be cause by retained fragments of placenta which can inhibit milk production. Now that this has been treated it is likely that you will see a difference.

He is gaining albeit slowly. We don't know what his lowest weight was which would have been around day 3 or 4 possibly. Some babies lose over a pound so he may well have gained more than you think.

Just continue as you are - don't be too concerned about the poo at this stage but keep an eye on things. Is he otherwise alert?

I agree with everything mears says....the infection you had may well have affected your milk production. Was it confirmed you had retained placental fragments?

The weight gain is very slow, but it is at least going up, but it's slow enough for concern....now you are better you should notice a difference in the weight, and his poos.

Can't see any reason for ff, as long as you are feeding effectively and as long as he is basically ok.

I think it would be sensible to keep a regular, weekly check on his weight, though.

Had a scan for retained products and they couldnt see anything but uterus was slightly bulky.

yeah he is very alert at times. i wasnt too worried before, dd lost 1lb ish but she was back to birth weight by 3 weeks

Well he's pooing again! Alot!

Still bit worried about his weight gain, can feel his spine when I hold him he has no fat on him at all anymore (although wasnt very chubby to start with), but he's being weighed friday so just have to wait and see how it goes i guess

i had similar problems when ds2 was born... wound infection and antibiotics.. every time i had to take the antibiotics (4 courses) he would lose weight!! the antibiotics gave him horrible nappies, and he definitely had a tummy ache!
