The formula milk copanies should at least be investing some of their profits in improving access to clean water for the developing world.

poor babies - think they do similar things in Africa

Seems there are two issues here.

One would be Nestle's clear and flagrant violation of codes and the other would appear to be that there seems to be no education on bottle feeding and the clear message that hygiene is paramount if someone chooses to ff, especially in these areas of the world. Clearly it is not the formula itself that is causing illness and even death, but the dirty water and lack of sterilisation of feeding bottles.

Clearly if there is a lack of clean water then ff should never be considered as an option.

It is hugely corrupt.

I confess I have not been as zealous in avoiding Nestle products as I should (ds likes shreddies), but thanks I will intensify my efforts and do it properly now

bastards. they must have meetings, you know, where they discuss the fact that they are killing babies.

From the report its not just nestle, so why is it only Nestle and nestle products that have beennamed?

wartybosoms · 15/05/2007 10:47

I'd say a lack of clean water is a fact that babies are sadly dying.

perhaps the Bangladeshi government could do something about that?

It says Nestle is spotlighted as they have flouted the rules somany times...

Report
wartybosoms · 15/05/2007 10:50

Completely agree that Nestle is complicit

Report
foxinsocks · 15/05/2007 10:50

eh?

if formula wasn't pushed like crack cocaine then there'd be no need to use the dirty water in the first place.

You can't just wave a wand and regenerate the whole water and sewage system in a developing country unfortunately.

If Nestle are making 16m per year selling thier formula milk in Bangladesh they should be resonsible for ensuring that the mothers have clean water for making up the bottles. They can certainly afford to do it.

I posted the link on Netmums with a question about their decision to accept sponsorship from Nestle but it's been removed.

I'd like to say I am shocked, but I really am not....

I cannot believe they charge £2 a tin though. In this country it is the equivalent of (basing on the average household income of 20k a year) £80 - 100 a week for baby milk. How anyone can reasonably justify this (irrespective of clean water etc) I dont know.

Clean water wont stop mothers from watering it down in order to make it stretch further.

Jacanne,really????

That is fucking outrageous!

They obviously can;t even accept people questioning their sponsors!
I reckon we should flood the damend site.

Top marks to MN for always supporting open debate on contentios topics (cf Aptamil debacle and Lunchables furore.)

it seems a large part of the problem is actually the lack of Support for breastfeeding mothers and the lack of clean water............and surely that can't be solely blamed on the Formula companies???

I'm sure with the money that's poured into the boycotting of Nestle products - a lot more people (not just babies) could have benifited from having clean water so that even if they were breastfed they wouldn't risk dying from waterbourne illnesses before they were 5yrs old.........which can happen whether they are breast or bottlefed....

oh and MoM agree with your 10.46 post too.
