Infant feeding

Hole in my nipple!

Ds has bitten me and I now have a hole in my nipple and it is agony! Is there anything I can do to help it heal?

I have been trying not to feed him on that side but end up so engorged I have to. He then sucks the scab off (nice) and I'm back to square one!

Is Savlon any good for nipples?

Lanisho will probably help. Een though the scab keeps comming off it will heal.

If you going to rest it you need to express the milk off. Probably best to hand express (no pump) as pump may take scab off too. Lansinoh will help.

Agree that feeding directly will still be OK. Change his position on that side too.

It seems like the hole is getting bigger! I've been having nightmares about my whole nipple detaching!

Oh you poor poor thing - this happened to me over New Year and it was total agony. It was constantly bleeding etc. I'll see if I can find the thread, which had some good advice, but things I did that really helped;
Straight after a feed I massaged some breast milk into it, then slathered Lansinoh cream on it.
Fed on the other side first, so when ds2 was REALLY hungry and feeding more strongly he was on the other side, then the injured side.
Fed in a different position - he always fed in the classic 'on my lap' position, so I made him feed under my arm in the 'rugby ball' hold which just meant he was putting pressure on slightly different bits of the nipple
Take a paracetamol 10 mins or so before a feed.

It will heal - it took about 6 weeks for me, and really was agony, but well done for persevering!!!

I'll look for that thread now.

Reread that thread - nurofen was really good as it can reduce engorgement (I think). It certainly helped.

oh yes, I had several holes over the course of a few weeks. It was excruiating but the lanolin cream really helped. And letting the air get to them.

It DOES get better. [sympathetic emoticon]

when I had mine, tiktok said it was best not to keep them open in the air, as that encourages 'dry healing' rather than 'wet healing' which the lansinoh encourages. You can get dressings from the pharmacist, but I didn't, the cream was fine.

Jelonet is also good, especially for the longer gaps between feeds (ie - hopefully - at night). You can get it over the counter at the pharmacist. Don't worry that it only comes in huge pieces, open the packet, cut off what you need, close the packet with a clothes peg and keep it in the fridge. Sterility not an issue.
